The most common error I see clients making within their daily routines are
1. Not wearing an SPF at all
2. Not reapplying as often as necessary, most of the time not reapplying at all
Our sun exposure (or how we protect ourselves when we are exposed to the sun) plays the biggest role in how we will age and whether or not we may develop skin cancers, aside from genetics and other certain lifestyle factors (like smoking, drinking, ect). This is why I talk about sunscreen an annoying amount to my clients!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “oh but I don’t really spend much time outside” when asking about daily sunscreen use.
We have to include time spent commuting, walking the dog, sitting in front of a window at the office. All of these things add up to total time spent in the sun.
Research has found that using an spf daily, as directed, reduces the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by around 40%, and can lower your melanoma risk by 50%. It will of course also reduce the signs of aging such as hyperpigmentation, including PIE/PIH, telangiectasia, and fine lines and wrinkles. Amongst other benefits, like a heathier skin barrier (which means healthier, brighter, happier skin all together!)
For the best level of protection against the sun, follow these practices!
• Wear and eat antioxidants daily
• Wear and reappy an spf as directed daily
• Seek shade whenever possible
• Wear sun protective clothing, including hats & sunglasses when outdoors
My philosophy is that you need to love your sunscreen so much that you would continue using it even if it wasn’t sunscreen (whether that be you love the way it makes your skin feel, makes your skin look, you love the smell of it, ect) If you have yet to find a daily sunscreen you LOVE please message me and we will find the perfect one for you. 🫶
