🐾 SHE WAS LEFT AT OUR DOOR. BUT HER STORY DOESN'T END HERE. 💔
Approximately 45 minutes ago, a blue vehicle pulled up outside the doors of our sanctuary. A gentleman exited the vehicle and left behind something that would change the course of our afternoon.
A cat.
Not a box of donations. Not supplies for the animals in our care. But a living, breathing little soul who, through no fault of her own, suddenly found herself without a home.
And just like that, our hearts broke a little more.
She is a six-year-old female, according to the limited information we were able to obtain from her microchip. Octavia a name given to her from someone who once loved her- thats all the information we have. We don't know where she came from. We don't know whether she was loved for six years or whether life has been unkind to her. What we do know is she is terrified, broken, and sad and we are heartbroken for this defeated girl. Often times rescue work just isn't fair.
We don't know the circumstances that led someone to leave her at our doors.
And we aren't here to pass judgment on a story we don't know.
Perhaps someone was desperate. Perhaps life had become overwhelming. Perhaps they believed that leaving her at an animal sanctuary was the kindest option they had left.
We may never know.
What we do know is that our community is facing an animal welfare crisis that is growing faster than rescues, shelters, and compassionate individuals can keep up with.
Every day, people are struggling financially. Veterinary costs are rising. Housing situations are changing. Animals are being surrendered, abandoned, and displaced at heartbreaking rates.
And the organizations trying desperately to catch them are drowning.
Today, that reality arrived at our doorstep.
When an animal is abandoned at a rescue, the responsibility doesn't simply disappear. It transfers immediately to an organization that may already be stretched beyond its financial, physical, and emotional limits.
For our little unexpected guest, that means an emergency veterinary appointment today at 3:45 p.m. with our wonderful veterinary partners at Midway Animal Hospital Inc. who graciously agreed to see her on such short notice.
Before she can safely enter our cattery and join the other cats in our care, she must receive the necessary vaccinations, testing, and veterinary clearance.
The estimated cost?
$250–$350.
Money we simply do not have sitting in reserve. Money we didn't expect to spend- plainly put money we just didn't have😔
And while that may not sound like an extraordinary amount to some, for a nonprofit sanctuary operating on donations, it is another unexpected expense added to an already overwhelming financial burden.
It means rearranging resources. It means worrying about how we will cover the next veterinary bill. It means stretching an already stretched budget even further.
And it means asking our community, once again, to help us carry the weight.
But there is another cost that rarely gets discussed.
The emotional cost.
Our staff members aren't immune to heartbreak simply because we work in animal rescue.
We feel it.
We feel it when an animal arrives frightened and confused. We feel it when we wonder what their life looked like before they came to us. We feel it when we look into their eyes and realize they have absolutely no understanding of why their entire world has changed.
And we feel the tremendous pressure of knowing that, regardless of how exhausted we are or how empty our bank account may be, another innocent life is depending on us.
These animals are not numbers. They are not inconveniences. They are not disposable.
They are lives.
And every single one matters.
We have involved law enforcement regarding today's incident, and we will allow the appropriate authorities to handle that aspect of the situation.
Our focus now is exactly where it belongs.
On her. ❤️
Because while today may have been one of the most confusing days of this little girl's life, we are determined to make it the beginning of something beautiful.
She doesn't know it yet, but she is safe.
She doesn't know that there are people already advocating for her, worrying about her, and working to ensure she receives the care she deserves.
She doesn't know that the doors she was left outside of lead to people who will fight for her.
And she certainly doesn't know that somewhere out there, a family may be waiting to love her for the rest of her life.
But we know.
And until that day comes, we will be her voice, her advocates, and her safe place.
Today, we are humbly asking our community for emergency donations to help cover her unexpected veterinary expenses.

But abandonment creates another crisis for an animal who never had a choice.
Compassion must extend to both the animals in need and the people struggling to care for them.
