Hello, art fans! I've been really busy lately with moving, starting a new job, etc., so keeping up with this page has been the last thing on my mind. But I wanted to share with you the story behind a few pieces of art I did a couple of months ago.
My friend's mom had a best friend who died unexpectedly about ten years ago, and she has been a mother figure to that friend's children since then. The friend hated having her picture taken while she was alive, and only a couple photos of her as an adult exist. So my friend's mom thought it would be cool if the children (who are now adults) could get drawings of her with them/their children since they don't have any pictures with her.
SO I did three drawings for this family. One was of the mother and her daughter, one was of the mother and her son's two children, and one was of the mother and her other son's four children. This was a VERY challenging project for me since many of the photos I was drawing from were of abysmal quality (the one of the mom was actually a picture of her driver's license photo from over ten years ago...extremely blurry, covered in spots, and not even showing most of her hair...), so I had to make my drawings less detailed than usual while still giving them a somewhat realistic look. I also had to change what some people were wearing, draw their hair down when it was up in the photo, etc.
It took a long time, but I was really happy with how the drawings turned out. I didn't get to give them away personally (she didn't want anyone around when they got them since she knew they would get really emotional), but she said they were all impressed and touched by the drawings, and they each took a picture with their drawing to send me.
Projects like this are why I love doing portraits. Having a drawing of someone you love can mean so much. :)
P.S. The drawings look much better in real life... I should have taken photos of them before giving them away, but I didn't think to.
