Are you having a hard time finding homes for your puppies and kittens? So are shelters and rescues. Please get your animals fixed! There are many resources available for pet owners from all walks of life. Please be responsible and take steps to ensure your pets are not breeding.

Many animals lose their lives every year because of an overpopulation crisis that often begins with accidental or intentional breeding at home. Every litter created adds more animals competing for homes while shelters and rescues continue struggling to save the ones already here. Each of those animals that dies came from a home where breeding was allowed. Being part of the solution starts with responsible pet ownership. Spay/neuter, vaccinate, and microchip your pets.

When we post our rescue animals with medical needs, we are not seeking medical advice. We are seeking support through shares, kind comments, prayers, and donations to help them receive the care they need.

Every medical case is different, and no two situations are exactly the same. We also do not post every single detail of a case online, but please know our rescue animals are receiving veterinary care and guidance.

We ask those who may feel inclined to diagnose based on limited information to please be careful. We see this happen far too often, not only on rescue posts but also with pet owners asking for financial help. Instead of support, they often receive medical advice and treatment suggestions from people who do not know the full situation.

This can become dangerous if someone follows advice for a condition that may not actually be what is going on. We absolutely understand that people are trying to help and care, but sometimes the best support is simply offering encouragement, prayers, sharing the post, or helping families and rescues access the veterinary care animals truly need.

Taz! Yesterday I got to meet this adorable guy! Even though I had a heartbreaking morning, in rescue we don’t get to take time to breathe. We had meet and greets scheduled with chores needing to be done. Taz will not be available for adoption until he has regained his strength in his back end. Once he is stronger we will get him neutered. We do not want to do that right now as he still drags himself a little bit which is problematic.

Poor Dixie has a untold story we haven’t shared until now. Dixie was the one who showed up at someone’s house having difficulty walking. When you watch the video you will see a perfect scar going around her backend like someone had something tied tightly around her. She is doing good but her rehab will take time to get her stronger. It is absolutely heartbreaking what these poor animals go through and unfortunately can’t give us details.

Sadly, today we had to let Smokey go. After his new bloodwork results and an ultrasound of his belly, it became clear that he was not going to recover and was suffering. As much as we wanted to keep fighting for him, we could not let him continue hurting.

Smokey touched so many hearts through his story, his bravery, his strength, and his funny little antics. He left paw prints on so many people, including us. This sweet boy fought so hard and was loved by so many. He will never be forgotten.

We cannot thank all of you enough for supporting Smokey throughout his medical journey and helping with his care along the way. We know so many of you loved him too.

Please consider donating to help with Smokey’s final medical expenses.

Smokey, we love you and we will miss you more than words can say.

I didn’t sleep much last night, as I’m sure many can imagine. Right now I’m waiting on a call for an update on Smokey.

First, thank you to everyone who has reached out with kind messages, prayers, and support. It truly means a lot during such a difficult time.

I will admit it was hard waking up and seeing some comments, especially with how a few things were worded. Please, if you do not know the full story or full medical history, do not assume. If you have not followed Smokey’s journey, seen the testing that has been done, or read through his veterinary notes, there are many pieces to his story that may not be visible in one post.

Please remember that rescue animals are not just animals we take in. They live in our homes, become part of our families, and are loved deeply. We know them, we care for them, and we fight for them every step of the way.

For those who may just be stepping into Smokey’s story, I encourage you to go back and follow his incredible journey and everything he has overcome. Here is Smokey’s bloodwork from yesterday. Yes, liver disease can cause anemia.

We have devastating news regarding Smokey. Since taking him in, Smokey has continued to have elevated kidney values on his bloodwork. Each time we rechecked them, the levels continued to increase. With the massive staph infection he came to us with, we hoped it was related to that and that once his body healed, his kidneys would improve as well. The staph was also in his brain. He has been on the special made antibiotics for almost 2 months. His liver counts were elevated before starting it.

Smokey has struggled to gain weight and has had difficulty staying on the same food for more than a week or two without issues. We kept searching for answers, hoping we could get ahead of whatever was going on internally, but sometimes with severe medical cases the answers come too late.

A few days ago Smokey stopped wanting to eat. We were able to get him to eat a little and drink water, but yesterday evening he was just not himself at all. We rushed him to the vet today where he remains hospitalized tonight. Sadly, his newest bloodwork shows that his kidneys is beginning to fail.

They are keeping him on fluids overnight and will rerun bloodwork tomorrow, but we are preparing ourselves for the worst. I am off tomorrow and if the decision has to be made, my husband and I will be there by Smokey’s side through it all.

Our vet feels Smokey likely suffered kidney damage or injury before he ever came to us. That is the heartbreaking part in all of this. Smokey fought so hard for his life and we fought right beside him every step of the way. He is such a special cat and I just wish he would have found his way to us sooner.

Please keep Smokey in your thoughts tonight. We will update everyone tomorrow.
