We had the pleasure of hosting a local Girl Scout Troop at the farm a few weeks ago. The girls learned a about how to care for & prepare a horse for a ride, & the aftercare that goes into keeping the equipment & horses in tip top shape. A friendly competition of "around the world" challenged their balance while mounted. It's always amazing to see how much confidence students build in just one lesson!

Looking for a fun & educational experience for your group outing? We are available for team building, birthdays, girls trips, reunions, homeschool field trips, & more. Just send us a PM or contact us through the website link in our profile.

Curse of knowledge- I did not realize how many riders truly don’t understand this very basic concept 🫣.
It sounds obvious, but:
• some riders nudge nudge nudge nudge until the horse goes. ❌
• some riders, put the leg on until the horse “kinda” goes a little, take the legs off, then ask again, not really get a response, take the legs off, try again, (sort of) ❌
• a lot of riders never actually take the legs off ❌❌❌❌❌

All of this is subconscious - riders THINK they are putting the legs on, and taking them off on the horse adequately responds. But they’re not.

So here’s your homework ….
Do a bunch of halt to walk, and/or walk to trot transitions. Start with legs OFF!!!! Then hug steady with both legs, and when the horse does the transition, DEFINITELY remove your legs.

Sounds simple????? Get someone to watch you. It’s amazing how many times riders give rogue leg aids!!!! 🤯

For many riders, competing—and winning—feels like the ultimate validation of their training efforts. But let me ask you this: Do you feel safe riding your horse across the showgrounds?

In today’s dressage world, so much emphasis is placed on a horse’s performance inside the competition arena. But what about outside of it?

✨ Does your horse travel well?
✨ Does he need extensive prep to perform his best?
✨ Can you confidently take him on a trail ride?

Now, don’t get me wrong—competition goals are great! I have them too. But the value of a well-rounded horse, one you can truly enjoy both in and out of the arena, seems to be increasingly overlooked.

Success isn’t just about scores and ribbons. You deserve to feel fulfilled and validated in your partnership with your horse—beyond what’s written on a test sheet.

✨ Does your horse stand for the farrier like a pro? 𝘈𝘮𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨!
✨ Does he lead, load, and tie like a gentleman? 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳!
✨ Can your horse confidently hack out on the trail? 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴!

Give yourself credit for having a truly GREAT horse—even if you don’t have a shelf full of blue ribbons. A safe, dependable, and enjoyable partner is worth more than any trophy.

It's a great day for a riding lesson on schoolmaster Bentley🌞🦄

And look at that McCauley's shine!
This horse had dropped a ton of weight last summer due to a medical emergency & subsequent hospitalization & a self-imposed hunger strike (apparently he did NOT want to retire! 😄). Add to that a severe VA drought all leading right into winter which is the hardest time on an elderly horse (oh did we mention he's like 26+ years old?!?).
All of that had us very nervous going into a really cold, tough winter with this old dude. We kept feeding his McCauley's Feeds Fab Fybe Plus & Rice Bran Oil, added in some Alam & Omega Bran from , put him back to his favorite job in our lesson program and he is blossoming 🌸 🥰

Be careful what you teach your horse by accident. 🫣
• I’ve seen people repeatedly bring their horse to the indoor or round pen and turn them loose and encourage the horse to run around… just to create a horse that “needs” to run the moment they get to that workspace.
• If you gallop at the same spot on a trail ride, you’re gonna have trouble NOT galloping that spot next time.
• I watched someone give an IV shot. They pressed on the vein to get it to pop up, and the every time the horse bobbed her head, and this person would take a moment and start over. I finally pointed out they were accidentally training the mare to bob her head.
• If you catch your horse and immediately take them away from grass, freedom, and friebds, you might yea h them to not get caught. Instead, halter them and then curry for a few minutes (if they like being groomed) or take them to a better patch if grass. Do something enjoyable. (Thankfully our horses enjoy working/teaching lesssons and come right to us, but you get the idea.)

These above are typical ones. Lisè and I KNOW BETTER, but a few years ago we accidentally taught Rave to rear every time we passed the parents 🫣
At the end of a leadline lesson we told parents to get their cameras out and have Rave rear. It was fun! (His rear is tiny and controled and the kids loved it!) Well, in the context of this post it’s easy to guess what happened- rear means we’re done!!! So 20-30 minutes into a lesson, especially if we passed by the parent seating he would stop a d set up to rear. Opps! So yeah, we don’t do that anymore.
