This we’re looking back at how much our female king vulture chick has grown since she hatched in February. She is the first king vulture chick in three decades to hatch at the Bronx Zoo! In one early photo, you can see how keepers feed the young chick with a hand puppet designed to mimic an adult bird in order to prevent it from imprinting on humans. Keepers also cover their hands, faces, and other human features when feeding. The puppet was designed and created by artists in the Bronx Zoo's Exhibition and Graphic Arts Department. Bronx Zoo ornithologists pioneered this technique more than 40 years ago when hand raising Andean condors.

Flash forward to present day, we have moved the young bird to an outdoor enclosure with perching next to an adult king vulture. Only downy chick feathers remain in small areas on the animal’s legs.

! There are more than 7,000 species of lizards in the world! On this special day, we’re highlighting one of the species that guests can see in our new World of Darkness exhibit. The Guatemalan beaded lizard is a venomous lizard that lives in the forests and scrublands of southeastern Guatemala. Its venom is used exclusively for self-defense and not for capturing prey. Their skin is covered in armor-like bony scales called osteoderms, which gives them their beaded appearance, hence their name. Fat stored in their tails helps them survive when food is scarce.

Unfortunately, these endangered lizards live in forests that are being destroyed for illegal cattle ranching. We at WCS work across Central America to support sustainable livelihoods and restore the region's five great forests.

Meet the okapi, the only living relative of giraffes! These shy, elusive animals—often called “forest giraffes”—are native to the Ituri Rainforest in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite their zebra-like stripes, okapis are not related to zebras. Those markings help them camouflage in the filtered light of the forest. Their large, upright ears give them exceptionally acute hearing, helping them detect even the slightest sounds and to stay alert to leopards and other potential predators.

Come take a look at the beautiful and unique okapis in the Congo Gorilla Forest!

Naked mole rats aren’t completely ‘naked’! Sensitive body whiskers help them navigate their dark tunnel system to find nutritious tubers and other food items. When they detect something with their hairs, they bring their sensitive teeth closer to investigate. Watching them busy in their burrows is captivating. If you have visited our California sea lions on Astor Court, you may have seen Senior Keeper Danielle and Keeper Kelly working on crate training. We are training this behavior to prepare one of our female sea lions for transport to our health center for a dental examination. Positive reinforcement allows an animal to become comfortable in a crate which reduces stress during short or long transports.

Have you visited the squirrel monkeys this summer at their outdoor habitat on Monkey Island in the Children’s Zoo?

The Guianan (common) squirrel monkeys at the zoo are endemic to forests in northern South America. Their tails are non-prehensile, meaning they can’t be used to grab things, but instead help with balance. With their large brain-to-body-size ratio, they are considered to be very intelligent. In this video our squirrel monkeys are all actively trying to snag a favored treat. Not to worry, the keepers make sure there is enough for the whole group. We hope you can swing by soon to see them all soon!

Meet the broad-snouted caiman, a freshwater crocodilian native to South America’s wetlands! With the ability to see well in low light and a face full of ultra-sensitive sensors (called ISOs - Integumentary Sensory Organs), they can detect even the slightest movement in water, which is perfect for catching prey, including snails, fish, and insects. Once their jaws touch their prey, they snap it up in under 200 milliseconds—as fast as the blink of a human eye!

Though listed as least concern, broad-snouted caiman are still threatened by habitat loss and pollution. That’s why we work with Indigenous and local communities in South America to protect these incredible reptiles.

Head over to the newly opened World of Darkness to see our broad-snouted caiman today!
