A little “behind-the-scenes” footage of what a drop in might look like when giving oral medications to a cat.
Oftentimes I’m asked, “How do you do it alone?” The best answer I have for you is to use common sense and your best judgment for you AND the pet In that moment.
If you have a cat or have been around them, it’s safe to say all cats are unique. Chloe Elizabeth is the kitty I am medicating in this clip. She is the SWEETEST girl, she is just not a big fan of med time.. and that’s understandable!
A few tips I can give:
- STAY CALM, they feed off of our energy
- have the meds right there ready to go, but don’t make them obvious to the pet
- approach the pet with the syringe from the side.. don’t go straight at them with it - they have time to prepare their dodge
- always keep control of the pet, and you can see how I hold her kind of like a football. Controlling her legs so she can’t swat me and keeping my hand near the back of the neck. I don’t squeeze the neck, but rather have my hand sitting near guiding the head
- reward your pet, praise them when they’ve accomplished the task. This helps leave tbem with a positive about the experience
- KEEP SAFETY YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY: for them and you. If a dose has to be skipped, consider the medication and if it can be skipped, and always be in touch with the owner and or veterinarian
I’m no pro, just have some experience under my belt. I hope these help someone!
