It's Monday!
Which means a day full of training and LOTS of puppies!
Reef and I love our puppies, it gives me a chance to get rid of my itch to get another one, and let's him romp and play.

Buying or adopting a new puppy is a huge responsibility that isn't to be taken lightly.
I often think about the hard work and time that goes into a puppy when I look at Reef now four years old with the first of his white hairs coming in.

He is much more calm now in his age and although adorable as a fluff ball puppy I prefer him lying by my side most days.

It is so important to remember this when you get a cute puppy.
It is 10-14 years if you're lucky with this built in best friend. Of all that time they are only cute and fluffy for about a year. It is a commitment, not a purchase. . You are taking this animal in as your "child" and they rely solely on you.

A puppy that respects you and listens to you grows into the ultimate best friend and companion.

Isn't Bella just the cutest?

Today we worked on teaching Bella to 'Relax".
I classify this as laying down with a hip thrown out or legs straight back (splooting). It is a more calm way of laying down, not in a stance ready to get up and move at any moment.
Relax is very helpful for dining out on outside patios, visiting friends homes or even just a quiet evening at home.
It's a way to have your pup lay down and understand that we are not moving anytime soon!

I teach this by first helping the pup get into a position that I consider 'relax" if it didn't happen naturally. Then once the behavior is achieved I reward almost constantly at first, then start to treat less and less the longer she stays in this position.
It is similar to stay, although you really want to be attentive to catching her before she stands up or moves from this position.
After some time we will be able to ask for "relax" and have her remain in it for any given period of time.

The ears are starting to stand up... Maybe he will start to listen now!

All jokes aside, Bear is doing amazing with his training. He is advancing quickly and is starting puppy level two commands at only 15 weeks.

We are working on sending him to his "corner" to wait for his parents to eat dinner or when visitors come to the house. Having a "corner" to send your pup too helps both owner and dog.
It gives the dog a safe place to go to time after time, making it easier for them because of the repitition of it.
For owners having a spot for your dog to go when you need to open the front door or when you're cooking in the kitchen makes for an all around easier life.

Bear is progressing quickly and we are VERY excited to see how much he really is capable of.

Resource guarding is by definition when dogs exhibit behaviors like growling, lunging, or biting over food or toys

For Reef it is a little bit different. He likes to claim things that are his, like my training pouch that has treats in it, or a new bag of dog food that we have yet to pour into the storage container.
He will lay there just like this, and guard the item for hours on end, until it is either picked up or put away. He doesn't mess with it or eat it, he is simply telling the other animals in the house that they cannot touch it.

I jokingly say he is being responsible, but the truth is it's natural instinct for dogs to resource guard, or also known ask "possession aggression".
With Reef it is harness, he simply growls and other animals back off. However some dogs become highly aggressive when resource guarding and it is very important to stop that at a young age.

I always keep an eye on him when this behind to see if he is becoming any more aggressive, but so far so good!

Today was a big day for Bear.
We went to the dog park to learn how to communicate with other dogs by interacting with them.
Although a little shy, he did so good! He sniffed and played, tried to hump and got snipped at!
All very important lessons for him to learn and the earlier the better.
We also worked on all the commands that Bear knows from inside training, outside.
Sit, lay down, stay, come.
All outside in an open field with sticks to chew on and lots of different sounds to distract him. It is very important to practice all commands in different surroundings to test your pup out.
To wrap it up we brought out to let them do a meet and greet! They truly had a blast!

Needless to say by the end of it he was one pooped pup!
A much needed day for him.

A busy work day means early morning exercise for Reef so that he behaves better throughout the day!
Less people around means off leash work, practicing come and other more difficult commands.
This is also an opportunity for Reef to act in a "primal" way and run around freely. He is good with "leave it" and also "no" so birds and other wildlife are safe.
All around a great start to our Thursday and an even better beginning to the weekend.
Get your pup out in nature and spend that half an hour with just the two of you.
Make time for your dog.

Teaching a new puppy to come is by far one of the most important things to implement early on.

Imagine your little fur baby sneaks out of the door when you go to leave, and darts out into the street. Being able to summon your puppy back to you quickly is the only thing stopping him from running away further out even possibly getting hit by a car.
'Come' is a basic command, one of the first we teach new puppies because it really sets up the relationship for you and your new dog.
After all, everyone knows that chasing a dog becomes a game and very rarely ends up with you successfully catching them.

We took this weekend to focus on us, and our mental health.

It is a running joke in our family that Reef and I are each other's "emotional support" because we rely on each other so heavily for everyday comforts.
The reason that I can lean on Reef like this is because of our open communication.

Dogs are able to pick up on anxiety along with other emotions of their humans.
Communication takes two, and your dog is eager for you to learn how to talk to them.
Learning the body signals of your dog, however small they may be, allow you to pick up on when he is feeling uneasy or stressed.
Fortunately for us humans, it comes naturally to dogs to read us and know when we're feeling those similar emotions.

Training your dog to become an emotional support animal is something I highly support and would love to help you out with!

Office days are Reef's favorite because it means lots of mommy time.
People all the time ask how I am able to go places with Reef and have him just hangout by my side.

Lot's of socialization.

Since he was 3 months old Reef has been my go to buddy to run errands, get coffee, make deliveries, and visit friends. He spent the first few years of life at my old job multiple days a week and off leash hanging out.
He has learned that not every new person wants to say hi to him and not every dog needs to be played with.
Yes sometimes he gets a bit excited but for the most part we now know better.

Socialization is such a key component in raising a puppy, teaching them that interacting with other humans or dogs is not a rarity but part of every day life.

Get your puppy out today to help socialize them.

Midweek check-in!

Ranger says "practice makes perfect" ...or in the case of most puppies practice makes for a better four-legged best friend.
Yes of course you can strive for perfection in most aspects of life, and even with the case of your furry friend. I think it's important to remember that a dog's greatest desire is to please it's human (most of the time!)

So work with your doggo not just in the beginning of getting him but also through his entire life, because it's fun for them and makes for a better dog for you.

Everyone say hi to Bear!

He is a nine week old Long Haired German Shepherd puppy. He is just as innocent as he looks and quite the good boy.

We are very excited to start puppy basic training with him this upcoming week.

Ranger- Puppy Session Two.

We worked today with Ranger on stay, long distance come, refreshed on sit and down.

Then we worked on loose leash walking and ended the day with a little fun, teaching him to rollover as seen here!

Ranger is a blast to work with, although full of energy. He thinks everything is a game, and we have to use that to our advantage to get him to focus!

Definitely one of my favorite pups, I cannot wait to see what you achieve Ranger!

Toys!
Coming home after leaving our dogs for hours at a time, seeing the toy bucket spread across the floor like this is a HUGE relief.
I'm sure you're thinking "that looks like a big mess" and oh yeah it is!
It also means that the toys served their purpose today. Our dogs were bored/stressed because we left them and in instead of being destructive to household items, they raided the toy bin!
Toys are such an essential when it comes to dogs because it is their property.
Toys are the one thing we encourage them to claim as their own. To gaurd, hide, chew or even destroy.

Try to NEVER scold or reprimand your pup for destroying a toy, no matter how cute you think it is, because that just confuses them.

Trust me when your dogs retire from eating the couches to shredding their toys you'll be thankful not even slightly upset!

After yesterday's adventures at the brewery, Reef needed to do a LOT of rehydrating.

Whether it be a 15 minute training session, a walk around the block or an afternoon at the dog park your pup needs to drink lots of water.
Try to remember to plan accordingly when you go out for adventures!

Sometimes it's something as simple as needing water that's keeping your pup from achieving the command you are asking of them!
It's a great refresher and a nice timeout for your pup to reset and be ready to go again!

Going into the weekend one of our favorite things to do is take the dogs with us to breweries.

How many of you can honestly say you can go out in public with your pup's and actually enjoy your time.
No barking.
No pulling on the lead.
No pacing back and forth.
Just a good ol' doggy sitting at your feet minding his own business.

With a little bit of help from me, socialization and some practice your dog could be your best bar companion.
