Max’s K9 Academy
Second Chances was built on one belief:
If we are going to save a dog’s life, we are responsible for setting that life up for success.
We are not a volume-based rescue. We are a professional training program that carefully selects the dogs we take in so we can fully commit to each one — physically, emotionally, and behaviorally.
As a small, self-funded organization with over three years of advanced training experience, we choose depth over numbers. Every dog matters too much to rush.
Health Comes First
Before a dog is ever considered for adoption, we make sure their body is supported and stable.
Each dog entering our program receives:
* A full veterinary examination
* Required vaccinations
* Deworming and parasite prevention
* Nutritional evaluation and support
* A thorough behavioral assessment
We do not place dogs with unknown medical or behavioral concerns. Stability is not optional — it’s foundational.
Raised in a Real Home — Not a Kennel
Our dogs live in our home.
This matters.
Because behavior cannot be accurately evaluated in a kennel run. True temperament shows in kitchens, living rooms, sidewalks, parks, and daily routines.
We learn who each dog really is through:
* Daily structured handling
* Real household exposure
* Public outings
* Controlled socialization
* Intentional training sessions
By the time a dog leaves us, we know them — not just their file.
Most dogs complete our program with a strong training foundation that may include:
* Sit, Down, and Place
* Loose leash walking
* Foundational recall
* Crate and potty training
* Calm public behavior
* Social neutrality and confidence
* Safe exposure to children and other animals
Training is tailored to the individual dog. We build clarity, stability, and reliability — not tricks.
Rehabilitation Done With Intention
Some dogs come to us confused. Some come anxious. Some come carrying the weight of neglect or inconsistency.
They are not labeled. They are understood.
Lead Trainer Kiara specializes in:
* Anxiety rehabilitation
* Fear and reactivity work
* Resource guarding behavior
* Trauma recovery
* Obedience foundations and basic/advanced training
We do not move dogs along quickly to free up space. We move when they are ready. No shortcuts. No rushed placements.
Responsible Surrender — A Safer Option
Life changes. We understand that.
When families face unavoidable circumstances, we provide a structured surrender pathway that protects the dog from unsafe rehoming or uncertain futures.
Surrender fees support:
* Updated veterinary care
* Training and stabilization
* Behavioral evaluation
* Careful adopter screening
* Safe placement preparation
Once a dog enters our program, their future is safeguarded. We do not let them fall through the cracks.
We conduct careful placements across the USA
We serve families nationwide through:
* Personal delivery with transition guidance
* In-person demonstrations during handoff
* Every dog travels safely
Every placement includes lifelong support. We do not disappear after adoption day.
Selective Matching — Not First Come, First Served
We do not match dogs based on who applies first.
We match based on:
* Home stability
* Lifestyle compatibility
* Commitment to continued structure
* Long-term readiness
We are transparent about each dog’s strengths, needs, and personality. Families deserve honesty. Dogs deserve appropriate homes that fits them.
Why We Exist
Too often, dogs are placed without full evaluation or preparation. Families are left managing behaviors they weren’t warned about. Dogs are returned, shuffled, or misunderstood. All that could have been prevented.
We refuse to participate in that horrible cycle.
Second Chances exists to bridge the gap between rescue and professional training — so dogs are not just saved, but truly prepared.
Our adoption fees reflect:
* Veterinary care
* Structured training
* Behavioral rehabilitation
* Daily hands-on development
* Lifetime support
We are small by design.
Intentional by choice.
Responsible by standard.
This is not a quick rescue.
This is commitment.
This is Second Chances
