Maple is looking to add more deer recoveries to her resume! Tracking in northern Indiana.

2024 was a SLOW season for us but we enjoying every minute we had tracking those deer! Here are the stats.
Tracking jobs :15
Recovered : 6
Not recovered/jumped : 9
Farthest recovered track : .6 miles
Biggest buck : 163 inches 220+ lbs

11/27/2024

Easy track for tonight. 70yrd shot after 4 misfires. The 5th “Hail Mary” shot connected. This hunter was madder than a hornet 🐝 after all those misfires but he’s happy now😂. And of course Maple is a happy hound dog!!

Maple went to work today!! 20ish hour old track.
Hunter had a drone out this morning with no luck so we got the call. Hunter tracked blood to about 200yrds and backed out with no grid searching. Maple made it to last blood and locked on to a good line and off we went. At the very end she lost it a bit and missed a turn and went a hair too far. I knew something was wrong and I was just about ready to turn her around and see what she missed when one of the guys following us said there’s the buck! She just missed the last j hook the buck made. Turned around and got her back on track and she finished her track! Little over 1/2 mile track. Happy hound dog and happy hunter!

EDIT: Hunter went in to check bed #4 (that the drone found after Maple and I backed out) at 18hrs after Maple and I bumped this deer off bed #3. So 30ish hours after deer was hit. Deer jumped off bed #4 and ran. This is one of those non recovery but successful tracks and I was happy to team up with Micah Yoder at BBD Drone Recovery to help give this hunter some closure. I think we’ll have a proof of life photo soon!

Absolutely crazy track yesterday! No recovery. Yet. Maple was hot on his trail but after the 3rd bed we decided to call a drone and see how bad this deer was hurting. The drone found him in another bed definitely not feeling good. We are hoping he is still in that bed this morning 🤞🏻.

Maple put one in the truck for an Indiana youth today! First deer with a compound bow for this young man! They did the right thing and only followed blood and when blood got harder to find they backed out. Made for an easy track and a recovery! Happy hound dog!

First track of the season!! Reduction zone.
Congrats Pete on an awesome deer!
Pete put a good double lung shot on this deer, and although he didn’t go too far there was zero blood.
Maple was pretty shy so she stayed out of most of the pictures but you can kinda see her in the background in one.

Made sure the nose was working properly the other day. She’s good to go!
Backpack is packed, headlamps are charged, and boots are by the door. Season is almost here and we are ready!

We are getting very close to deer season!!! This is just a reminder of what grid searching does to a track. When you are tracking your deer you are picking up scent on your shoes and clothes from that deer. When you grid search you are laying down more paths which can take hours to work through. Sometimes we can get through a grid search if we can pick up a line on the outside of the grid, and sometimes we can’t. If it comes to a decision to try a grid search, please call a dog instead!
If you have decided to call a dog remember where you “backed out” and the path you took to get out.
