My lovely Lana crossed the rainbow bridge today. She came to me from the elist at County after being dumped by her family. She was deaf and blind with rotten teeth and a large tumor. We were able to remove the very large mammary tumor and give her a dental so she could live pain free.

Lana loved sunning on the patio, doing laps in the house and most of all loved to eat her food and treats. While she didn’t interact with the other dogs much and struggled with accepting affection she was content in her little world, safe and warm and very much loved.

Over the last week she stopped eating and started sleeping more. We tried everything we could to restart her hunger drive but she politely declined. She let me know she was done, that it was time to say goodbye.

Goodbye my Lana Lou. Know that you were an amazing dog, that you were loved, that you mattered. I know the Shady Pines residents who passed before you are greeting you now and will show you the way.

HUGE THANK YOU to Molly & Friends Pet Grooming. The babies were getting scruffy and a spa day was definitely needed. They are so gentle with my seniors and they always look and smell amazing after. Thank you Diana for always squeezing my babies in. I appreciate you so much!

Welcome Matteo!

This sweet 16 year old fella was surrendered when his owner could no longer care for him. He is visually impaired but so far healthy otherwise. He is an absolute sweetheart and is my new little shadow. He is already making friends with Jack Jack and Ladybug. They are the cutest little trio! Welcome to the Shady Pines family Matty!

Last week Bella and Teddy went to see our amazing vet Michele Johnson due to coughing and panting excessively. Teddy also has a mass on his upper chest and Bella has a bleeding cyst on her tail.

Unfortunately, both were found to be in congestive heart failure. Teddy is an OG at Shady Pines and Bella is our resident princess. The thought of losing either one is heartbreaking. Both had blood work completed and were started immediately on medications. Bella also had her tail addressed. Teddy’s mass will have to wait due to his current condition.

Please keep these sweet babies in your thoughts and prayers. We have had so much loss lately and I can’t bear to lose anyone else.

We now know why Darci is paralyzed. She was shot with a bb that lodged into her spine. The little circle is the bb. She was also found to have a neurogenic bladder, which means she can’t urinate on her own and her bladder must be manually expressed at least 3 times a day. She also has liver disease requiring medication . As she went a week with being expressed (we didn’t know her bladder was neurogenic) she likely has a UTI as well.

I am shocked and horrified. How can you shoot a defenseless dog like that? We just learned her first owners used her as target practice and she was saved by her dad, who recently passed away. Humans can be so cruel.

Sweet Darci has been through so much. Despite all this she remains a sweet girl who just wants love and security. We are committed to caring for Darci, giving her the best possible care. Due to the complexity of her condition, she will remain with me.

An angel has gained his wings. My sweet Wesley passed away in my arms today. I told him I loved him, that he mattered, that he will always be in my heart. Then I said goodbye.

He was only with me for 3 weeks- not nearly long enough. We tried everything we could to save him, but his body was too weak, his condition too advanced. I wish I could have given him more. More time, more comfort, more everything. I loved him so very much. I am sorry I couldn’t save him. I am sorry that humans let him get this bad off without helping him. If we could have met sooner…

Run with the angels sweet boy. The Shady Pines crew will be there to greet you. You are pain free forever now.

Miss Ladybug had a spa day today to prepare for surgery on Thursday. She went super short since she won’t be able to be groomed for a while after her hip surgery.

I can’t thank Molly & Friends Pet Grooming enough for squeezing her in to ensure she is ready for Thursday. Thank you Diana Greene for holding her up when she couldn’t stand. You have a kind heart and I appreciate you so very much.

Rescue is never easy, but some weeks are nearly unbearable.

In the last 2 months I have lost 5 residents at Shady Pines Sanctuary . A tremendous loss. And now I am at risk of losing 2 more.

Wesley- an elister who has been here for just 3 weeks, came to us blind, deaf, emaciated and with rotten teeth. Despite frequent feedings and antibiotics he has lost weight. He is now being syringe feed and while he readily takes the food he continues to lose weight. The doctor suspects aggressive cancer. We are doing everything we can to try to turn him around. I am
Not ready to say goodbye to this sweet boy but I will not let him suffer. I am praying he will improve.

Ladybug- she came in as an elister as well. She is obese, has rotten teeth and liver disease. She has been here several weeks and we have been working on getting her weight down and her liver levels down. About a week ago she dislocated her hip. Her joints are under tremendous strain due to her weight. Her liver has improved significantly and she can now have surgery to repair her hip. Its still very risky, surgery and recovery, due to her weight. However, without surgery her quality of life is very poor. Surgery is her only hope.

Please send thoughts, prayers and good energy our way. We need all the help we can get. When I bring a dog in my goal is to give them love, support and safety and more time to enjoy these things. I truly hope we have more time to give these sweet babies.

In honor of Clooney….

Welcome Jack!

Little Jack was found as a stray and taken to County. His owners were located but declined to pick him up. After 10 years of loyalty his family abandoned him.

Jack is very underweight. Every bone in his body is jutting out. He has no teeth and a significant heart murmur. He was so severely matted we had to rush him to my amazing groomers, Molly & Friends Pet Grooming, straight from the shelter. For this reason we didn’t get any “before” pictures. Thank you a million times over to Diana Greene for squeezing him in for a 911 grooming. You guys are angels!

Jack is a sweetheart and a total lap dog. He wants nothing more than love and safety. And good food! Don’t worry sweet baby, you are safe now and will never be abandoned again. We will get you all sorted. We love you already!
