How is Wren settling in? Well I think it's safe to say she has settled in beautifully.
She has only been here a couple days but took to her crate wonderfully. Fussed the first night or two for a couple minutes then fell asleep. She has slept from 10-6 the last 2 nights even when she sees I am awake she just waits quietly in her crate.

Puppy tip #1 MAKE A POTTY CHART

With the newness of a puppy so much can just blend together in the day to day. It can be hard to remember when the puppy peed or pooped last, especially if you have several human helpers. WRITE IT DOWN. Doesn't need to be anything fancy (I didn't even print out the potty chart I designed several years ago). It will help remove gray area, you will learn the individual habits of your puppy, and get a good system going. It may look a little different each day but it's a great habit to get into.

Meet the newest addition, Wren.
She is an English Cocker Spaniel and pictures really don't do her cuteness justice.

I have enjoyed cocker spaniels from a distance for many years. Occasionally I have been lucky enough to have some in for training and they have always been a trip. When this litter popped up and I had a chance to talk to her breeder it just sounded too perfect a fit to pass up.

For now she is just getting used to life here. But like all our dogs we will likely dabble in all sorts of things and see what we enjoy together. And of course she will eventually help train dogs as others have.

Pardon the radio silence, we went on a little vacation to Canada to visit family. Still playing catch up.

Food for thought... time and place for the use of a harness, but never been a fan of those that go across the shoulder blades.

This is a repost(ish) but well worth repeating. Many of you have heard me harp on harness fit time and again. Having spent decades evaluating harness fit in working dogs of all types with thermal imaging (as well as having years of working and active dog experience combined with a strong biomechanics knowledge base) using front-clipping or "Gentle Leader" type harnesses only guarantee more structural stress in active dogs that makes for more work for me and other chiro/sports med colleagues. PLEASE only use harnesses that fit with proper ergonomics! [NOTE: I've tweaked the English & syntax in the added-on description below so it might read a little differently.]

"All dog owners should know this fact! A harness like this is a terrible injustice to your pet!! AVOID USING THIS TYPE OF HARNESS !

In a dog's forward movement, a harness with a tape that crosses its chest from side to side hinders it in the same way humans would bother going hiking with an elastic band holding their arms. Physiological movement of the front extremity is prohibited. Just like rubber would inhibit the pendular movement of our ARMS.

Thanks to the "Study of Canine Movement at the University of Jena", we now know that in the dog, the center of rotation of the front limb is at the top of the scapula, but in the human the center of rotation in the arm is in the shoulder (head of the humerus). Jena's study demonstrates, among other things, the importance of scapular movement for dog locomotion. Now we understand the importance of taking into account the free movement of the dog's shoulder when choosing a chest harness.
That means there SHOULDN'T be bands across the scapular (orange) area, and they shouldn't cross the chest side to side either.

From the point of view of biomechanics and physiotherapy, it is recommended not to choose getting harnesses that have a strap that goes through the chest laterally, or that have straps that touch or press the scapula.

Always lean towards harness models with ERGONOMIC design, to allow maximum freedom of movement for your dog, improve his well-being and safety during his walk.

I love updates like this, makes my heart happy.

Nash had a lot of potential despite how frustrating it felt to live with him before training. So happy I could teach everyone new skills and ways of living together.
Results like this wouldn't be possible without his owners doing their work too. I am only one part of the equation. Good work guys!

Reese brought her crew to board. Bruna (tan dog) and Winnie (grumpy chi) settled in well. And Bruna is finally letting her hair down and playing a bit. Winnie conserves her energy and fun polices from a distance

We hope everyone is staying cool this week.
Be sure to keep in mind how hot that pavement can get.
Here is the temp this afternoon and the temp of the road. I did my back of the hand check too and it was already uncomfortably hot in about 2 seconds.
Its best to stick to walking very early or very late. Or you can find shaded dirt paths to walk instead of the road.

Tank the vizsla got to meet Riggo the French pointer before he went home. They sniffed, hopped and pranced... and proceeded to be awkward before running some short laps and peeing on things together. 😆
