Remember that 1 foot hike?
You can do it on a hike. The seasons are changing, we are going towards the dark half of the year. Spend some time outside and feel it. It’s almost festival season. We still some space available so invite us to yours!

Have you ever taken a 1 foot hike?
This is something I used to do with my kids when they were small. There’s so many lessons that can be learned when you can control your body and sit quietly grounding yourself on the earth. Try it for yourself and let me know what you find. This little guy could’ve sat on my thumbnail. Glad I didn’t over look it definitely made me smile on a rainy day.

My new favorite bird that I never knew existed!!
A week or so ago, a neighbor brought me this little bird that they found on their front lawn. I was told it couldn’t stand well and they had no idea where it came from. My guess is that it was a prey item for a larger bird that dropped it. The bird wasn’t necessarily injured, but needed time and to be re-waterproofed. (Yes, that’s a real thing). After about a week of caring for it we decided it was ready to be released.

The pied-billed grebe who by the way has about 12 other names some of my favorites are hell diver, devil diver, and water witch. However, its Latin name translates to “feet at the buttocks” and as Latin names go it’s also a good one. 😉

These birds very rarely fly and actually cannot walk on land you know, because of that feet at the buttocks thing. They spend their entire lives in the water they even build their nests on top of the water. They are the coolest little birds! Hopefully this one will stick around and have lots of little baby water witches we can watch grow up.

Anyone else ever see these?

🌸 A Walk, a Garden… and a Fairytale Twist 🌸

One morning’s stroll down a flower-lined sidewalk in Maine took an unexpected turn. Among the bright blooms and buzzing bees, I spotted a plant with a darker story—commonly called monkshood but we know it by another name.

With its striking purple hood-shaped flowers, monkshood is as beautiful as it is dangerous. The little beasts look like they’re screaming or laughing. This plant contains a deadly poison that has been whispered about in fairytales and woven into legends for centuries. Sometimes called “wolf’s bane,” it was once believed to ward off werewolves, witches, and evil spirits… but in reality, its toxins can be deadly even in small amounts.

It’s a reminder that nature is full of wonder, mystery, and lessons—some wrapped in beauty, others in caution. 🌿✨

Meet Eileen!
Aptly named because, well… she leans.
(Sure it’s a little off kilter, but so is she… and we love her for it!)
Eileen came into the world during what we lovingly call a “snac-cident”…
One of her siblings mistook her back leg for a buffet item. He’s since been legally dismembered from the family tree. No hard feelings… just hard boiled huevos. 🥚
Despite being a tripod tegu, Eileen gets around just fine. Especially if there’s food involved!
Besides, what’s one leg when you’ve got all that tongue?!

Of course, we wouldn’t be us if we didn’t “learn you something” before you left…
Did you know, Tegus are one of the only lizards that can regulate their body temperature. Basically the warm blooded weirdos of the reptile world. So yes, Eileen’s hot… and she knows it. 💅

And lastly, for the true nerds that have read this far… That’s called “seasonal endothermy”.
It’s rare in reptiles, which are usually ectothermic or better known as cold blooded.
