What is the most common sport worldwide associated with a high evidence of injury? Football. Per the National Library of Medicine, of 116 analyzed players with injuries, 62% of those injuries eventually resulted in retirement of the sport also known as a career ending injury. Most of those injuries involved the lower extremities such as knee and ankles.
Every year the Jockey Club releases a report from the Equine Injury Database. This year is the 16th year compiling data from racing related injury and deaths. In 2024 the fatal injury rate was 1.11 per 1,000 starts, the lowest rate since the EID began in 2009. This is the fifth consecutive year that the rate of fatal injury has been below 1.5. The rate of fatal injury decreased 15.9% from 2023 and has decreased 44.5% since the first statistics were published from the EID in 2009.
What is your thoughts on this? In our opinion the number of equine injury related deaths is extremely low. 1000 starts is 100 races if there were full fields of 10 (not that common anymore), so that is actually more than 100 'on the card' races.
Most things in this world are a constant evolution toward betterment, and Horse Racing is no exception and the data collected proves that Horse Racing is going in the right direction.
