This was NOT OUR RECOVERY, but is an EXCELLENT example of YOU MUST NEVER CHASE A LOST DOG! THIS DOG WAS APPARENTLY LOST FOR 3 weeks, but dogs can go into flight mode within hours of being lost.

Even when he’s finally in a closed fenced area with his owners, he continues to run and it takes a bit for him to relax and feel “safe” enough to go to them.

PLEASE SHARE FAR AND WIDE! SHE COULD BE ANYWHERE!

UPDATE: despite covering 483 acres meticulously we did not locate Aspen today.

16 year old Aspen was last seen in Hinsdale MA yesterday( Saturday ) at 5 PM on Smith Rd heading into the woods towards Middlefield. She has a multi color( mostly purple and pink) collar on. We will be searching for her this morning. If you live in Hinsdale or surrounding areas, please take a minute to check your yards, sheds, out buildings or covered porches, and keep an eye on any trail cams or ring cameras. If you or anyone you know lives near this location, please reach out to them and have them look as well. She is VERY friendly, BUT - IF YOU SEE HER - DO NOT APPROACH OR CHASE HER - THIS COULD CAUSE HER TO RUN. Call or text her owner at (413) 446-4958 immediately. When your dog goes missing, time is of the essence!

Early use of a thermal drone can be highly effective, while waiting even a few days can make recovery significantly harder.

For the first night or two, frightened dogs often hunker down and stay in one place. There has also been less chasing, calling, and search pressure, so they probably haven’t been pushed into constant movement yet. After a few days, there’s no way to know how far or in what direction your pup has gone, so doing a drone search then is likely useless without a confirmed sighting.

Searching in the first 24-36 hours means more predictable behavior—and a much better chance of locating them where they are. Act early while the search area is still relatively small!

Whether your dog is off leash on an “off leash approved” trail, in your yard, or at a dog park, reliable recall can be a LIFESAVER. Contact a reputable dog trainer to learn the process, but ultimately it comes down to YOU building a strong bond, clear communication, time, and consistency. For example, our young, healthy, high–prey drive dog was able to enjoy a five-mile walk in the woods today BECAUSE she has excellent recall. For safety, she’s also wearing a training collar as backup, a GPS collar, bright orange and a bear bell. A DOG GOING MISSING is DEVASTATING! Don’t wait to do the work to keep them safe!

Did you know that snow changes scent patterns, muffles sound, hides fences, and can disorient even well-trained dogs? With a storm just around the corner, using these 5 tips at LEAST for the next couple of days can help keep your dog SAFE and HOME…

1) NO OFF LEASH TIME — even in yards with invisible fences! Accompany your dog on a leash every time they go outdoors, and put the leash on BEFORE opening the door so there’s no opportunity for a sudden bolt.

2) CHECK FENCES AND GATES! Snow drifts can create “ramps” over fences or push gates open - clear fence lines and secure all latches.

3) SHOVEL A CLEAR POTTY AREA! Create a visible, contained space so your dog isn’t wandering through deep snow where boundaries are hidden and they can get confused.

4) USE REFLECTIVE, ORANGE OR LIGHT UP GEAR EVEN IF ITS LIGHT OUTSIDE. If visibility is low, reflective collars, bright colors or LED lights make your dog easier to see quickly.

5) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A CURRENT PHOTO in case ( God Forbid) your dog does go missing.

🍀LETS MAKE THIS A STORM THAT ALL DOGS STAY HOME AND SAFE THROUGH! 🍀

WHEN A DOG GOES MISSING, you should avoid doing anything that will make the them feel pressured in any way. ONCE THERE HAS BEEN A SIGHTING: the worst thing you can do is to send multiple people into the area to search. Seeing more than one person, and/or being pursued often pushes a dog out of the one place they felt safe enough to stop running. Once a dog feels anything that could be perceived as a threat, instinct can take over, which could cause them to run into traffic, cross unsafe terrain or thin ice, or travel miles beyond the area where they had been quietly sheltering. Each time they’re pushed, the danger that they’ll run increases. SLOW AND STEADY is always the best way to go….
