Historic Second Series Called at the National Amateur Gun Dog Championship
With only one brace remaining and a bye dog due to a female coming into season, judges at the National Amateur Gun Dog Championship made the rare call to run a second series to reach an agreeable placement between Rocky and Leonard. A second series at the National has not been called since 2002, underscoring just how close and competitive the decision was.
While the lone female in the running could have earned a placement, the judges still needed to resolve positioning between Rocky and Leonard. The final brace ultimately failed a stop-to-flush, prompting officials to move the field to Course 2 for a runoff.
The second series lasted approximately 30 minutes, testing both dogs under intense pressure and demanding conditions. The final call came in dramatic fashion: Rocky standing solid on point as three full waves of birds took flight, all while he remained steady and composed. The display occurred before his handler could approach from horseback and even dismount —an unforgettable moment of discipline and polish.
It was a championship performance in every sense of the word.
