๐จ ALGAL BLOOM ALERT: Lake Norman ๐จ
The NC Department of Environmental Quality is warning the public to avoid contact with green or blue water in Lake Norman, where algal blooms have been observed in multiple areasโincluding Iredell, Catawba, Lincoln, and Mecklenburg counties.
These blooms are caused by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), which can sometimes produce dangerous toxins that affect humans and pets. There's no way to tell if a bloom is toxic just by looking at it, so caution is key.
๐ As of June 19, reports have been concentrated in the northeastern portions of the lake, but blooms may move due to wind and wave activity.
โ ๏ธ What You Should Do:
-Avoid water that looks green or milky blue
-Keep children and pets away from the water
-Rinse off thoroughly if exposed
