When trying to decide which species of livestock to raise, a good question to ask yourself is: "Do I have more space or more time?"

A basic truth of animal husbandry is that an animal's size tends to be inversely proportional to its feed conversion efficiency. Meaning, cattle and horses will produce much less meat per hectare of pasture than sheep or goats, who will, again, be much less efficient than rabbits or cavies.

However, larger animals will produce much more meat per unit of labor invested. For example, producing ten tons of rabbit meat takes far more man-hours than producing ten tons of grass-fed beef.

For a family that wants to be self-sufficient on a modestly-sized plot, a cow is a liability. Likewise, a rabbitry would be a bad fit for a small family managing a huge ranch.

Determine what the limiting factor is, in your case — space or time, and to what extent — and plan your farm accordingly.
