K-9 Knox would like to ensure your pets stay safe during extreme heat, prioritize hydration, shade, and avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat hours. Provide fresh, cool water at all times, create shaded areas indoors and outdoors, and limit exercise to cooler parts of the day.
Never leave your pet in a parked car, and consider using cooling mats or other cooling products.
Walking dogs in extreme heat can be dangerous and potentially life-threatening due to the risk of heatstroke. Temperatures above 80-85°F can pose a risk, and temperatures above 90°F should be avoided entirely for most dogs.
Dogs can burn their paws on hot pavement. 🔥 The paw pads, while durable, are still susceptible to burns and blisters from hot surfaces like asphalt and concrete. Even on relatively warm days, the pavement can heat up to temperatures that are dangerous for dogs.
🔵 How to tell if the pavement is too hot:
The seven-second test
If you can't comfortably hold your hand on the pavement for seven seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws.
Check for signs of heat:
If the pavement feels hot to the touch, or if you see heat rising from it, it's likely too hot. 🔥
Signs of burned paw pads: 😟
Limping or reluctance to walk: Your dog may try to lift their paws or avoid putting weight on them.
Excessive licking or chewing at paws: This is a sign of discomfort and pain.
Redness, swelling, or blistering: These are clear signs of burns.
Darkening of paw pads: This can indicate heat damage.
What to do if your dog's paws are burned:
Cool the paws: Rinse them under cool, running water for several minutes.
Seek veterinary care: For severe burns, consult a veterinarian immediately for proper treatment and pain management.
Prevention is key 🔑
Walk your dog during cooler hours.
Early mornings and late evenings are best when the pavement is cooler.
Use paw protection: Consider booties or paw wax to create a barrier between the paws and the hot pavement.
Stick to grassy areas: Grass stays cooler than pavement and is a safer alternative for walks.
