Is your dog muzzle trained?

Wearing a muzzle is an important skill for all dogs to learn. Muzzles can facilitate safe handling, prevent ingestion of non-food objects, and change the way people approach your dog, creating a less stressful experience for everyone.

Muzzled dogs are good dogs whose owners are being proactive about their care. Let's change the stigma and support positive reinforcement muzzle training for all!

🐾 Is your pet up to date on parasite prevention? 🐾

Think it's too early for parasites? Think again!

❗️Many people are surprised to learn that TICKS ARE ALREADY OUT! Ticks become active any time temps are above freezing (32F), regardless of the time of year. Right now we are in the middle of one of their prime seasons (March to May and August to November) and they are out in full force.

🦟 Mosquitoes are active any time the temperature is above 50F. With our frequent mid-winter thaws here in New England, that makes heartworm disease a year-round concern.

🪳 Fleas thrive at 50F+, but adults can survive on your pets even in cold weather. They also love hiding indoors in carpets, baseboards, and furniture. Once an infestation takes hold in your home, it's a nightmare to get rid of.

Bottom line: seasonal prevention isn't enough. Your pet needs flea, tick, and heartworm prevention all 12 months of the year.

Here's a picture from today's walk to prove it! 🤮

This month marks two years since our practice officially opened (Dr. Racine says it feels longer!), and wow, what a journey it has been!

To celebrate, we’re sharing before-and-after photos of our space, from those early days right after signing the lease to the completed renovations and opening day in February 2024. We’re so proud of how far we’ve come and grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way!

At The Behavior Vet, our work is grounded in compassion, safety, and evidence-based, humane approaches. We believe that fear, force, and punishment — whether directed at animals or people — cause harm and trauma, not healing.

We are deeply troubled by what is currently happening in our country, including violence and human rights abuses carried out in the name of enforcement. We do not support ICE or its affiliates, and we stand against practices that harm, dehumanize, or terrorize people.

Our practice is an inclusive, affirming, safe space. We welcome and respect clients of all races, religions, immigration statuses, gender identities, sexual orientations, and family structures. This commitment isn’t political for us — it’s foundational.

You cannot meaningfully advocate for compassion, understanding, and positive reinforcement in animals while remaining silent about violence toward people. Our values do not stop at the exam room door.

This statement reflects our values and how we choose to show up for our community. We know not everyone will agree, but we will always stand on the side of compassion, dignity, and safety.

At The Behavior Vet, we are committed to science-based, humane, and effective behavior care. This means we do not use or recommend punishment-based training methods—including aversive tools like shock collars—because research consistently shows they can increase fear, anxiety, and aggression.

Instead, we focus on treatments and training approaches that protect animals’ emotional wellbeing while helping families make meaningful progress.

The American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB) has released an important clarification about shock collars and behavior treatment, which aligns closely with our practice philosophy. Sharing it here for anyone interested in learning more.

🚧 Heads Up: Construction Zone Alert! 🚧

There’s currently major construction happening right outside our building, yet again—complete with noise, heavy equipment, and what appears to be an attempt to dig a crater to the center of the earth.🚜🕳️

If you’re coming in for an appointment, please be extra cautious in the parking lot, especially if your pet is fearful, reactive, or noise sensitive. Make sure pets are:

✅ Securely leashed or in a carrier

✅ Under control at all times

✅ Protected from any unexpected noise, machinery, or movement

If you need assistance getting your pet into the building, please call us at (860) 458-4424 when you arrive. We are happy to come out to help.

Thanks for your understanding while we coexist with the backhoes and jackhammers. We promise it’s still just the doctor inside—just with a little more rumble in the background!
