I know AI is a touchy subject for a lot of people, especially creatives, and I completely understand why. I truly respect and value everyone’s opinions on the subject, and I encourage open, constructive dialogue around it.
As a solo business owner, I simply do not have the money to hire graphic designers, social media managers, photographers, copywriters, marketers, etc. Most days I’m just trying to survive while physically grooming dogs all day, handling scheduling, customer communication, equipment issues, bookkeeping, and everything else that comes with running a business alone.
Unless you’ve been in the position of desperately trying to keep a small business alive while barely staying afloat yourself, it’s hard to fully understand the reality behind why some of us use AI tools.
Without tools like ChatGPT, I honestly probably wouldn’t have much of a social media presence at all. AI has helped me communicate better, create graphics and educational posts, and stay visible enough online to bring in much needed business.
It hasn’t replaced my experience, my care for animals, my work ethic, or the quality of the service I provide. It’s simply become a tool that helps me keep my head above water in a world where small businesses are expected to constantly create content just to stay relevant.
I would LOVE to outsource all of this someday. Truly. But right now it’s either use the tools available to me… or disappear online entirely.
So for me, AI hasn’t been about laziness or deception. It’s been about survival.
I completely understand why people have concerns about AI. But I also think automatically refusing to support small businesses simply because they use AI overlooks the reality that many of us are just trying to survive with the limited time, energy, and resources we have.
At the end of the day, I also view using AI as a personal choice. Choosing not to support a small business solely because they used AI to help create an advertisement feels a bit like refusing to support a business because the owner is vegetarian. You may not personally agree with someone’s choices, but that doesn’t automatically erase the value, care, or quality behind the business itself.
It’s not as black and white as many people believe. I think this is one of those situations where we should replace judgment with curiosity and try to better understand why people are using these tools in the first place.
