Welcome to the world, Jade x Rocky babies, round 2!

Surprise! I had planned to share that Jade was expecting a little sooner, but she decided to keep me on my toes and deliver on Monday instead of her “expected” due date of Wednesday.

My heart has been soaking up the MUCH needed puppy therapy and all the happy vibes that come with a beautiful new litter of 8. Today, I decided it was time to stop being selfish and share the puppy love with the rest of the world!

Jade was an absolute rockstar mama, and she delivered her babies over a calm 9 hour stretch. Then we all took a well earned nap. No scary moments or drama this time around (which I welcomed with open arms!). The only hiccup has been her milk taking a little longer to come in, so I’ve been giving the two smallest, Green boy and Orange girl some extra TLC to help them keep up. Keep hanging in there, little ones! 🙏🏼💚🧡

In total, we have 3 boys and 5 girls, all beautiful, all sable. This litter broke our boy-heavy streak we had going the rest of the year! Puppy spam will be incoming in the next several weeks! 👏

I’ve been searching for the right stud dog to add to our program, someone who could diversify our genetics since Rocky is closely related to two of our females. The answer came in the form of Quest!

Imported as a puppy from Czech and raised, trained, and titled by the talented Eliza Collins, Quest checks every box that matters to us. He brings:

- A strong pedigree with no close relation to our females
- Excellent health (SV hips/elbows A normal, LUW 0)
- Steady, rock-solid nerves

In the three weeks he’s been here, nothing has managed to rattle him. Quest is incredibly social and adaptable, he’ll happily work for anyone and is safe, friendly, and easy to hand off. At the same time, he shows serious strength in defense work and never backs down under pressure.

We believe Quest will produce the best of both worlds: fantastic working dogs and well-rounded family companions. At home, he’s goofy, playful, and full of personality (Hype might just have some competition for the title of “house clown” 😅). Quest has a way of making you laugh and has brought some much needed joy into our home already.

We are so thankful to Eliza for trusting us with this special boy. Please help us welcome Quest to the VGH family! ❤️️🐾

Goodbye, sweet Sisu!🥹

Our beautiful girl is off to begin her next chapter in the mountains of Colorado. There, she’ll get to do all the things she loves most putting that incredible sniffer to use playing nose work games and soaking up every adventure. Her new life includes a stream in the backyard, the mountains as her playground, and most importantly, a person who already adores her. For the first time, she won’t have to share her human with any other dogs. She gets to be someone’s one and only!

Sisu, the sky is the limit now. Spread your wings, sweet girl, and fly. You’ve given us so much love and joy, now it’s your turn to be cherished beyond measure. 💚

I’ve been avoiding writing this because putting it into words makes it feel too final. But on Monday, September 1st, just one week after Indy passed, my sweet Haven let me know it was time to set her free.

That morning she didn’t want to get up. Even if I tried to support her and help her stand, she’d immediately lie back down. I was able to get her to potty and get some water, but throughout the day she just wanted to rest. Then, she refused food. For Haven, who never turned down a meal in her entire life, that was the clearest sign. People say, “they’ll tell you when it’s time,” and while that isn’t always true, with her it was.

I had been fighting for her, ordering supplements, trying every option I could find, clinging to stories of dogs beating lymphoma with prednisone or other therapies. But her cancer was aggressive, and looking back, I realize the signs had been there since June when we went to the vet. I’ll always regret the timing of that rabies vaccine that visit, not because I think it caused her cancer, but because I think it sped things up and stole precious time from us.

Haven was my girl from my very first litter. She was the last to arrive, born into my hands after hours of waiting and worrying. I was terrified she wouldn’t survive (I was silly and overly dramatic), and when she came out perfect, I cried tears of joy.

Over the years she grew into a beauty, but it was her role as a mother that defined her. Haven was legendary. No puppy was ever left behind. If one wandered, she’d bring it back to the milk bar herself. She allowed her babies to nurse right up until the day they left us, and more often than not, she’d choose to sleep right in the pen with them, surrounded by a pile of warm puppies. Her instincts were so strong that she even “adopted” four puppies from another mother, instantly integrating them into her litter of 4 and treating them as her own. Being a mom was her greatest joy, her life’s purpose. When retirement came, she mourned deeply, pacing at the sound of other litters crying as if to say, “No one raises babies like I do" as she glared at me in outrage. She was right, no one ever has, and no one ever will.

When the time came, I was blessed with the most compassionate vet, Dr. Dawnetta Woodruff, who left her family dinner to come help Haven pass peacefully. I’ll never ever be able to thank her enough for all the times she's been there for us in our time of need.

We said goodbye on a blanket I had saved from Havok’s passing. Haven sniffed it thoroughly, and I believe she smelled her dad. When I handed her Havok’s old chuck-it ball, she proudly stole it, squishing the air out of it over and over, satisfied she had finally gotten away with something he never would have allowed. It felt like her last little victory.

We gave her ribeye steak, and she enjoyed every bite. I told her how much she meant to me, to us, and to everyone who has one of her puppies. I asked her to tell Havok, Indy, Lexi, Buck, and her brother Argo that we love them. And I told her to tell her dad she stole his ball. Then she drifted off peacefully, my brave and beautiful girl.

It’s strange to have a house full of dogs and still feel like it's not "home" anymore. Losing Havok, Indy, and now Haven in such a short span has left me devastated. Haven wasn’t just another dog, she was my cuddle buddy when Kevin traveled, the one who broke the “no dogs on the bed” rule, my buddy. The loss of their steady companionship is unbearable.

But I hold on to their legacy in their children. Hype, Havok’s son, and Star, Haven’s daughter, are with us, carrying pieces of the two dogs who shaped so much of our lives!❤️‍🩹

If you’ve read this far, thank you. Haven deserved a proper tribute. She was one in a million, and she will be loved and missed forever.

She can hardly walk today and she won’t eat. It’s time. 😭😭😭💔 Haven my baby girl I will never be the same.

I was scrolling through my camera roll yesterday, clearing things out, when I stumbled across the last pictures and videos I ever took of Indy, the ones I thought weren’t “post worthy.” The blurry ones, the silly ones… What I didn’t know then was that they were the “lasts.” The last time I’d capture his bouncing around, his genuine happiness playing, and with his BFFs boy (who looks so much like his father). Hype was running around like a maniac and I was worried he’d knock Indy over. It was just a week or so after Havok passed, and Indy still carried that grief. But in spite of my worry, Hype was a good boy. Looking back now, I’m so grateful I pressed record. These imperfect little moments mean everything. Keep the pictures. Keep the bad ones. Someday, they’ll be the most precious things you have.

I can’t believe we are here again. Last night, one of the very best dogs we’ve ever been blessed with passed away peacefully in his sleep.

We adopted Indy from JCAC 12 years ago. At the time, my intention was simple - I was casually looking for a dog I could put some training on and then find him a good home, just for the cost of an adoption fee. But then I saw Indy’s baby picture on their website. The depth of sadness in his eyes stopped me in my tracks.

When I went to meet him, he was quiet and withdrawn in his cage. But the moment we stepped outside into the yard, something in him shifted. He opened up completely, and I got to see who he really was. In that instant, I knew I wasn’t leaving without him. I signed his adoption papers right there, and Indy came home.

When we arrived home he was overjoyed. He quickly made friends with every dog we had, but his bond with Havok was special from day one. They were inseparable. If you found one, the other was never far away.

Indy only had one flaw: he wasn’t a fan of strangers. His fear could make him a risk to bite, and we knew that in the wrong hands, that might one day get him into trouble. But with us, we could safely manage him. And from that moment on, there was never a question. Indy was ours forever. He became the girls’ dog, and they constantly fought for space on their bed with both him and Havok. He was part of their childhood, part of our family in every way.

It’s heartbreaking that good things eventually come to an end. When Havok passed away just a month before Indy’s 12th “Gotcha Day,” Indy was visibly upset. But then he reconnected with other dogs in our pack, friends he hadn’t been around much while Hav was losing mobility. He seemed happier than ever.

Last night was no different. When I let him out, he was happy and bouncy. He came in eagerly for his nightly dental chew. He was eating, drinking, playing, asking for pets, doing all the things he loved right up until the end. Indy was healthy, steady, and never gave us a minute of trouble we couldn’t easily manage. And like the good boy he was, he went out on his own terms - no vet, no strangers, no fear. Just us, his family, exactly the way he would have wanted it.

And now, after just a short time apart, Indy is back with Havok again. Imagining them running together like they always did brings me peace. Best friends reunited, right where they belong.❤️‍🩹

Update on our beautiful girl, Haven…we have been in and out of the vet since June trying to figure out what was going on with her mobility. She seemed to get hurt jumping down from the bed, and within a few days her overall mobility had drastically changed. Her senior bloodwork panel was perfect, nothing was seemingly out of order. She had 2 small spots of spondylosis on her spine but nothing that would explain the complete decline of mobility. It was whole body, not just the front end, not just the rear end.

Finally on the last visit we had, the vet said her lymph nodes were slightly prominent and we believed she might have some swelling in her front legs. A sample was taken of those lymph nodes and came back highly suspicious for lymphoma. She had an ear infection as well, and some small part of me was hoping this was a vestibular problem due to that. By the first part of the following week, I did get the news I'd been expecting to hear. The lab came back with her test results as "highly suspicious for lymphoma" but inconclusive. I received a script for prednisone for her.

I had to do a wash out period for the carprofen she had been taking (which had done next to nothing to help her). Of course, after her first dose of steroids she was able to get up on her own power and walk without her front end giving out on her. Talk about a double edged sword. While I was thrilled she was feeling better this was almost confirmation in my mind that lymphoma is indeed what we are dealing with.

After this year, losing Buck end of March, Havok end of May, and now this... I haven't been present much on social media and I know this probably explains why. Not to make it about me, but living in a cycle of grief, anticipatory grief, loss, then going through all of the same cycle again and again, I just haven't been myself. I want to apologize to anyone I haven't been communicating with like normal. I want to do better for everyone but it is just hard right now. At the moment, I am just taking it day by day and focusing on her quality of life. I know the prednisone is just putting a bandaid on the problem, but I will try and enjoy the time I have left with her, and set her free when things are at the beginning of getting bad again, before she starts to suffer.

Eleven and a half years just doesn't seem fair after I was blessed with 14.5 with her father. Havok, why do you always have to set the standards for everyone who comes after you? I know we were uncommonly lucky with him, and 11.5 isn't super young for the breed, but I am a selfish person. No amount of time would ever be enough. Haven, we love you, and I swear I will do right by you. You deserve nothing less from me.

Our Story

We are a small working line German Shepherd breeder with over 10 years raising and working with working line dogs, and over 6 years of breeding experience. We first fell in love with the breed when working in law enforcement. We purchased our very first working line German Shepherd puppy in 2010 and our love for the breed grew from there.

We decided to put quality dogs into the hands of working dog enthusiasts for work and also for families who wanted a stable active family companion dog. In 2013 we began to utilize some of the finest European Working Line German Shepherd bloodlines to create the foundation for our kennel. We continue to further the bloodline we created from both the puppies we hold back from our breedings as well as importing very high quality dogs from trusted friends overseas.

We are located on nearly 5 scenic acres in a lovely valley surrounded by woods and wildlife. Our dogs each enjoy time out and about on our fenced property. In warmer weather they play in the creek along the back of our property. Our dogs are not strictly kennel dogs, we keep them in our home with us. Our Puppies are whelped in the large whelping area and are raised in a stress free, private environment by their mothers. Happy mamas = happy and healthy puppies! Our puppy room is climate controlled, puppy proof and safe! We sleep next to the new litters until the puppies are big enough to find their mothers easily. Puppies have daily human interaction and play time, plus introduction to puppy friendly dogs who enjoy playing with the little ones and teaching them boundaries plus manners! Family owned and operated, breeding quality dogs is our passion. We are happy to give a lifetime of breeder support for our buyers if they need us. We encourage updates, and love to see pictures of our pups in their new homes! No matter what you are looking for in a quality pet or working prospect, you can trust VGH Kennels to work with you in finding the right dog for your family situation!
