What defines stranger danger?

Stranger danger is generally described as fearful, sometimes aggressive style behavior to people that are oftentimes strangers. Seems like a logical explanation. Most people don’t like to admit their dog experiences these types of responses to people for their own fear they will be ridiculed or judged. Avoidance of these behaviors from your dog doesn’t make the problem better but neither does pushing your dog passed their threshold to accept strangers. Most dogs exhibit these responses due to a lack of socialization with people during their younger years however oftentimes we can start to see this develop around 2-3 years old. If your dog isn’t happy to see people, prefers to hide, bark or run away, you ought to consider helping them work thru this. An overall generalized anxiety takes over for your dog and they will usually choose the path of least resistance, hiding behind you, hiding under the bed, barking or lunging at strangers, and unable to often self-calm.

Please stop encouraging your dogs responses by avoiding strangers altogether. Below you’ll find three course dates where we invite you to not only learn what you could be doing wrong to enforce this behavior and what is necessary for your dog to overcome this. Please don’t wait until your dog makes a mistake to address it. Unfortunately once the mistake is made, we’ve seen too many dogs who can’t recover and owners who give them up. This doesn’t have to be their outcome but it starts with you. Your dog trusts you but they will start to question your ability to manage them in the presence of these triggers if you don’t know how to do it yourself.

Join us. Come to one class, come to them all. Your choice. The more your dog learns what to do, and the more you learn what to do for your dog, the better your relationship will be and the better your dogs responses will become.
