Good to know! I love squirrels, regardless of how the dogs feel about them. πΏοΈ
Healthy baby squirrels can get separated from their mom due to natural causes, like storms, or unnatural onesβlike when their nest is in a car engine that drives off. The good news? Reuniting them is usually simple. Just follow a few easy steps to return uninjured babies to their mother!
1. Warm up cold babies. Even if it's warm outside. A baby that is cold to the touch is far less likely to be reunited. Microwave a hand towel for about 20 seconds and wrap the baby in it while you microwave a second towel. Keep switching out the warmed towels to raise the baby's core temperature. Provide a heat source in the baby's container (open topped box or basket), such as a warmed sock filled with dry rice or "instant" hand warmers wrapped in a cloth. (e.g. Hot Hands)
2. Don't feed wild babies. (Even if every fiber of your being is telling you to feed it.) Wild animals have very sensitive digestive systems that are easily disrupted by cow's milk, commercial pet milk replacers, and homemade recipes. Babies can aspirate causing pneumonia, eat too much causing bloat, or get "baby formula" stuck on their face resulting in fur loss or even infection. We've seen it all. Rest assured, healthy babies can survive 48 hours without food. Hungry babies call for mom, it helps her find them.
3. Put the baby outside, as quickly as possible and as close as possible to the location it was found, or close to the nest if the location is known. Keep pets and people away and give mom all day to retrieve them. She has a second nest ready, but she may be moving other young or waiting until the coast is clear.
4. Bring the baby in overnight if mom has not retrieved it by dusk. Place 1/2 of the bottom of the container on heating pad set to low. Put it back outside first thing the next morning. The reuniting window for healthy babies is at least 24-36 hours.
As always, if a baby is obviously injured, or all reunite attempts fail, reach out to a permitted wildlife rehabilitator in your area. Thank you and stay safe!
