FIV affects a cat’s immune system, making them slightly more vulnerable to infections. However, with regular vet checkups, a healthy diet, and staying indoors, FIV+ cats thrive just like any other. They’re playful, loving, and fully capable of enjoying life in a forever home. FIV is primarily spread through deep bite wounds, not casual interactions like grooming or sharing food. If your FIV+ cat is non-aggressive and your FIV- cat is friendly, they can happily coexist.

Adopting an FIV+ cat means opening your heart to a wonderful companion who will love you unconditionally. These cats often get overlooked but have so much love to give!

*** AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION OR RESCUE ***

Hello! I am Belinda, and I'm so pleased to meet you! I am a brown tabby beauty, approximately 2 years old. I arrived here as a stray on June 16, and I have stories! I am a social, friendly kitty, and I have important things to say. Who doesn't love a good conversationalist?!? Another thing about me is that I tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). You can read more about FIV below, but the short story is that I can live a long life with FIV, and it is much harder for me to pass it to an FIV negative cat than was previously believed. I will go home with you spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated appropriate to age. I am negative for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).

SPECIAL NEEDS: Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). In infected cats, FIV attacks the immune system, leaving the cat vulnerable to other infections. Though there is no cure for FIV, recent studies suggest that cats with FIV commonly live average life spans, as long as they are not also infected with feline leukemia virus. FIV is a highly species-specific virus that infects only felines. There is currently no evidence that FIV can infect or cause disease in humans. The primary mode of transmission for FIV is through bite wounds from an infected cat. Casual, non-aggressive contact, such as sharing water bowls or mutual grooming, does not appear to be an efficient route of spreading the virus. As a result, CATS IN HOUSEHOLDS WITH STABLE SOCIAL STRUCTURES WHERE HOUSEMATES DO NOT FIGHT ARE AT LITTLE RISK OF ACQUIRING FIV INFECTIONS.

RESCUES: please contact Sangamon County Animal Control & Adoption Center for more information about sweet Belinda and how to become an approved rescue partner if you are not already. Thank you.

When feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) was first identified in the 1980s, misconceptions led to the unnecessary euthanasia of many FIV+ cats. Today, we know better: FIV+ cats can live long, healthy, and happy lives with proper care.

What Does FIV Mean for a Cat’s Life?
FIV affects a cat’s immune system, making them slightly more vulnerable to infections. However, with regular vet checkups, a healthy diet, and staying indoors, FIV+ cats thrive just like any other. They’re playful, loving, and fully capable of enjoying life in a forever home.

Can FIV+ Cats Live with FIV- Cats?
Yes! FIV is primarily spread through deep bite wounds, not casual interactions like grooming or sharing food. If your FIV+ cat is non-aggressive and your FIV- cat is friendly, they can happily coexist.

The Takeaway
Adopting an FIV+ cat means opening your heart to a wonderful companion who will love you unconditionally. These cats often get overlooked but have so much love to give!

*** AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION OR RESCUE ***

Hello darlings! I am Wren. I am a high white calico beauty, approximately 3 years old. I arrived here on June 5 with five babies. I have been a fabulous mother, but my kittens are all old enough to be away from me now, and it's time for me to be the baby - YOUR baby! I do need to let you know that I have tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).

SATURDAY HOURS 9 AM TO 1 PM. COME IN TODAY TO MEET SWEET NOAH! 😽

Greetings, my name in the system here is Naloxone, but you can call me Noah. I am an extremely friendly house panther with super soft fur and gorgeous eyes. If you like head bunts and sharing your chair, I am your cat! They think I'm around 2 years old, and it is believed that I do not care for other male cats. I arrived as a stray on May 14, and unfortunately, I tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). You can read more about FIV below, but the short story is that I can live a long life with FIV, and it is much harder for me to pass it to an FIV negative cat than was previously believed. I will go home with you neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated appropriate to age. I am negative for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).
