The key to preventing laminitis in your horses is to regulate their time grazing on grass high in nonstructural carbohydrates. Inadequate exercise is another cause of this painful hoof condition.

Let’s talk F***L WATER SYNDROME 💩

F***l water syndrome (FWS) is a collective term for when water presents before or after immediate defecation in horses. There are many potential causes and as a result, many treatment plans.

1.) What is the QUALITY of the forage we are feeding?
+ Is it stemmy (full of non-digestible fiber)?
+ Is it too rich? (I,e; pure alfalfa for a horse in maintenance level work?)
+ Have there been any recent dietary changes?
+ How is the horses’ dentition?
+ Is this equine on a regular deworming schedule?

• Going forward in treatment we recommend a strong fiber (psyllium husk, I,e; Sand Clear) treatment for 7 days, then the first 4-5 days of each month. This slows down the GI tract.

• Additionally, a good probiotic with diverse families and a large count of CFUs. - This replenishes the good GI flora lost to diarrhea.

• In addition, a strong electrolyte to replenish the hydration that was lost to the diarrhea

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SPOT COLIC IN HORSES?

Colic indicates a painful problem in the horse's abdomen (belly), which can be caused by a number of different conditions. Less than 10% of all colic cases are severe enough to require surgery or cause the death of the horse; nevertheless, every case of colic should be taken seriously because it can be difficult to tell the mild ones from the potentially serious ones in the early stages.

Horses show signs of abdominal pain in a wide variety of ways, and usually a horse shows only a few of the signs during an episode of colic. The rule of thumb is — the more obvious the signs of pain, the more serious the problem.

If you suspect the horse is suffering from colic, we suggest that you:

• Alert your veterinarian immediately

• Remove all hay and grain from the horse's surroundings

• Don't medicate without your veterinarian's approval, as pain medications can mask clinical signs

• Walk the horse around if it's continually rolling or in danger of hurting itself — but do not tire the horse with relentless walking and don't approach the animal if it's not safe

• Keep the horse under close observation until the signs of colic resolve or the veterinarian arrives

The key to increasing the chances of a good outcome is to identify the problem early and get your veterinarian involved from the start.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of colic signs. Horses are individuals and may display signs of pain in a variety of ways. Always consult your horse doctor for more information.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong in life, and if you own a farm you know most of them happen while you’re away! It is extremely valuable to have someone knowledgeable and dependable looking after things in your absence. In the seven years I’ve been farmsitting and petsitting I have seen a lot. Whomever you ask to watch your animals should be inquiring about these things;

✔️ Current vet contact info
✔️ If electric fences - where the fencer is located
✔️ Location of fuse box
✔️ Contact info of neighbors or local family to call should livestock get out
✔️ Where fencing materials are located
✔️ Location of ‘the vet kit’
✔️ Who is handling snow removal (if applicable)
✔️ If any animals are on meds or have preexisting medical conditions
✔️ Person authorized to make difficult decisions on client’s behalf in the event they cannot be reached
✔️ Backup water source in the event an automatic waterer fails

It is truly never a “throw hay twice a day and check that the automatic waterer is working” situation. In the event that something catastrophic happens, you’re going to want somebody present who can take charge and problem solve. Whoever you hire should be checking over all animals at least daily (if possible) for injuries and illness at the bare minimum, and that’s non-negotiable in my opinion.
Like anything in this world, you get what you pay for. You may continue to hire the 12 year old neighbor kid for $5 - but I bet he isn’t asking where the fencer is…..just sayin’. 😉
All of my love, & also my two cents!
