Update: This one was challenging to write. 😔
We have received data from October’s euthanasia list and would like to remind the community that our records for all animals are not complete. This month is crucial; will SCRAPS break the record and revert to the euthanasia rates seen before the no-kill era?
It's important to remember that 2017 was the last year SCRAPS operated as a kill shelter, with a total of 178 dogs euthanized. Let’s see how our current averages compare.
Here are the numbers:
**Feline**
- Total: 30
- Cats: 19
- Kittens: 11
**Canine**
- Total: 24 (including 1 puppy)
- Aggressive Towards People: 1
- Irremediable Prognosis: 16
- Terminal Illness/Injury: 1
- Deemed Dangerous: 5
- Potentially Dangerous: 1
Pictured are 18 of the 24 dogs we were able to identify. For brevity, we have not included their IDs and names this time.
From January 1, 2024, to October 31, 2024, SCRAPS has euthanized a total of 192 dogs.
Let us reiterate: in 2017, the last full year that SCRAPS operated as a kill shelter, 178 dogs were euthanized. SCRAPS has already surpassed that figure and still has two months left in the year.
We must ask: how does this align with the No Kill philosophy? How long must we plead for the killing to stop, and at what number will we finally say enough is enough?
Spokane, we must do better. We need to be better and demand better. Please make sure to spay and neuter your pets.
If you ever need assistance with resources for training, spaying, neutering, or vaccinations, please do not hesitate to reach out. While we may not have the resources to help directly, we will guide you to those who can.
Now is the most critical time to focus on pet retention! Keep your animals out of SCRAPS and off the streets; they may not make it home.
