The Dog Meets World program was utilized at SCRAPS in 2019 and 2020. This program pairedmembers of the community with shelter dogs for field trips. Outings included a hike, a trip to a lake 🏊‍♂ or shop or other destination, a coffee ☕ or meal in a pet-friendly establishment, or couch time 🎥!

Dog Meets World was created to help reduce kennel stress and provide shelter dogs with enrichment and increased visibility. Outings gave the shelter valuable insight into dogs’ personalities outside of a shelter environment.

Please see the attached publication regarding the findings of this program.

Today some of us were able to attend a No Kill Spokane Informational Event that was organized by Kevin Vanhook. A representative from our organization was also invited to speak, which was an honor.

To say there were some contentious moments would be an understatement but we are hopeful for more meetings to address the animal welfare issues in our community and come up with solutions.

We are disheartened, though, to hear a rescue representative state during this meeting that No Kill is what everyone in the room wants, but then to see a post that not only that rescue organization but a local Veterinarian clearly do not share that sentiment. Apparently that opinion has then spread to the rescues volunteers.

Individual opinions aside, however, many in the community came together today to advocate for the animal care they believe in. It was said over and over during the meeting that there is a "Community Issue". This post shows that this Community Issue complex and very colored by deep seated views. Without honest and transparent communication, the likelihood of the community being able to come together on these issues is unlikely.

In the past, The Underground Rainbow has spoken about how these types of posts and comments are so toxic for Animal Welfare. We are saddened to share this reality and the hostility and lack of tact by the commenting parties.

Dave Richardson was knowledgeable, not disrespectful, brought up some excellent points, and has expressed interest in meeting with our organization to have further discussion.

It's an uphill battle but hopefully we can all come together and make some real change for the animals and our community.

A few things to note regarding the 2024 SCRAPS Stats

There were some odd findings with status changes during the month of December. 51 Fowl and 16 Rabbits had their status changed to “Transferred out” on 12/28/24 but it was backdated to reflect a Status change date of 8/8/24. Without pulling individual records and reviewing for actual transfer, etc I am not able to determine that these statuses are accurate and just a reflection of human reporting error or if they are inaccurate.
2024 has the LOWEST number of animal intakes since 2016
2024 Has the HIGHEST number of Euthanasia and animals who died in their care
These numbers are WORSE than 2023, the first full year that SCRAPS had Director Ferrari

Intakes 2023=5914
Intakes 2024=4643
1271 LESS Animals taken in

Euthanasia 2023=372
Euthanasia 2024=500
128 MORE Animals Euthanized/Killed

Died in Care 2023=185
Died in Care 2024=191
6 MORE Animals Died while in their care

Is this what our tax dollars are paying for?

Update: This one was challenging to write. 😔

We have received data from October’s euthanasia list and would like to remind the community that our records for all animals are not complete. This month is crucial; will SCRAPS break the record and revert to the euthanasia rates seen before the no-kill era?

It's important to remember that 2017 was the last year SCRAPS operated as a kill shelter, with a total of 178 dogs euthanized. Let’s see how our current averages compare.

Here are the numbers:

**Feline**
- Total: 30
- Cats: 19
- Kittens: 11

**Canine**
- Total: 24 (including 1 puppy)
- Aggressive Towards People: 1
- Irremediable Prognosis: 16
- Terminal Illness/Injury: 1
- Deemed Dangerous: 5
- Potentially Dangerous: 1

Pictured are 18 of the 24 dogs we were able to identify. For brevity, we have not included their IDs and names this time.

From January 1, 2024, to October 31, 2024, SCRAPS has euthanized a total of 192 dogs.

Let us reiterate: in 2017, the last full year that SCRAPS operated as a kill shelter, 178 dogs were euthanized. SCRAPS has already surpassed that figure and still has two months left in the year.

We must ask: how does this align with the No Kill philosophy? How long must we plead for the killing to stop, and at what number will we finally say enough is enough?

Spokane, we must do better. We need to be better and demand better. Please make sure to spay and neuter your pets.

If you ever need assistance with resources for training, spaying, neutering, or vaccinations, please do not hesitate to reach out. While we may not have the resources to help directly, we will guide you to those who can.

Now is the most critical time to focus on pet retention! Keep your animals out of SCRAPS and off the streets; they may not make it home.

To view the complete list obtained through public records, please visit the files section of our private Facebook group, where you will find the full euthanasia list for October and previous months.
