Rabies is a neurologic virus that can cause a variety of neurologic signs before ultimately causing the death of the animal or human. It is sometimes referred to as the “great imitator” and can only be definitively diagnosed after the animal dies by collecting a specific area of brain tissue.

Rabies is always fatal, but it can be prevented by receiving proper immunization! Call 508-885-4205 or contact [email protected] today to schedule a rabies booster for your horse, goat, sheep, llama, or alpaca!

Fall Vaccine Reminder!

Did you know that many vaccines should be given every 6 months for complete yearly coverage? That’s correct! EEE, WEE, WNV (eastern/western equine encephalitis, west nile virus) and flu rhino, are some common vaccines that provide protection for less than 1 year (usually 4-6 months). It is typically OK to give these vaccines once a year if the timing is right (i.e. give the vaccine shortly before the busy show season and mosquito season).

Since we live in New England, the weather tends to throw us some curve balls that may change vaccine schedules. For example: Mosquitoes will linger as long as the temperature is to their liking, therefore if your horse received the mosquito vaccines in March and April, then you want to booster in September to ensure protection through the end of mosquito season!🦟

If you are unsure of your horse’s protection or would like to schedule a fall vaccine appointment, please call the office @ 508-885-4205 or email [email protected].

What is fat leg disease?
Fat leg disease is also known as cellulitis. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection and inflammation that affects tissues under the skin throughout the body. In horses, this severe illness usually affects the hindlimbs. It is distinguished by a quick onset, substantial swelling, and severe pain.

What causes cellulitis?
Cellulitis can occur following trauma to the horse’s limb, resulting in an infection under the skin.

How can owners prevent cellulitis?
Monitor for any wounds and clean them thoroughly. If you turn your horse out in a damp environment, ensure you dry their legs to minimize moisture. To maintain circulation, keep the horse moving and exercising regularly.

Below is helpful information provided by AAEP to help recognize the signs of cellulitis!
