One policy I strongly believe should implement is requiring every live animal seller to ask the buyer when they want their order shipped before the order is finalized.
Unlike dry goods, live animals aren't just another package. Shipping dates matter for the health of the animal and the success of the delivery. Every customer's schedule is different. Some customers are traveling, some work long hours, some prefer hub pickup on certain days, and weather conditions can change quickly.
Making shipment scheduling mandatory would provide several benefits:
- Improve animal welfare. Animals would only be shipped when the customer is available and prepared to receive them, reducing stress, delays, and unnecessary risks.
- Reduce DOAs and shipping claims. A large number of issues happen because an order is shipped when the customer isn't expecting it or can't receive it. Confirming a shipping date helps prevent avoidable losses for both buyers and sellers.
- Create a better customer experience. Customers would know exactly when to expect their order instead of wondering when it will ship or having to message the seller afterward.
- Protect vendors. Sellers often have to delay shipping due to weather or customer availability. Having a built-in shipping confirmation creates clear communication and documentation, reducing misunderstandings and disputes.
- Increase confidence in buying live animals. New customers are often hesitant to purchase live animals online. A required shipping confirmation shows that Palmstreet prioritizes responsible live animal shipping and animal welfare.
A simple solution would be to require buyers to select a preferred shipping week or date during checkout, or require sellers to send a shipping confirmation request that must be acknowledged before a live animal order can be marked ready for shipment.
Palmstreet has done a great job building a marketplace for live animal vendors. Implementing a required shipping confirmation policy would further set the platform apart from competitors by improving animal welfare, reducing support cases, lowering shipping-related issues, and creating a better experience for both buyers and sellers.
