🐭✨ A NEW WAY TO ADOPT FROM RENO RATS! ✨🐭
We’re making some changes to how our babies find their forever homes!

After a lot of thought, we’ve decided to say goodbye to our traditional waitlist. 💛 We loved the fairness of our waitlist system, but as Reno Rats grew, so did the list, and managing it often meant families waited months for babies while we spent a lot of time following up with people whose plans had changed.

So we’re simplifying!

🐭 Here’s how adoptions will work moving forward:
Available babies will be offered through local Reno Rats adoption events and/or posted as available on our social media pages.

Adoptions will be first come, first served following application approval. You’ll still complete our adoption application, and all of our usual placement requirements will remain in place. We’re changing how you get your babies, not our standards for where they go. ❤️

We’re also moving toward a cluster breeding schedule, meaning we’ll have several litters around the same time followed by longer breaks. Overall, we’ll be producing fewer litters each year, so there will be periods when Reno Rats babies aren’t available.

We know that sometimes the right time to add rats to your family doesn’t line up with our breeding schedule. We have other breeders and adoption resources that we’re happy to recommend and can help point you toward places we trust. Send us a message anytime for our current recommendations!

These changes allow us to spend less time managing lists and more time doing what matters most, raising healthy, well-socialized babies and giving each litter the time and attention they deserve.

🐭💙 MEET ALFIE — Looking for His Forever Home! 💙🐭

We’d like to introduce you to a very special little guy who has been staying with us for the past month — Alfie!

Alfie is a young male top-eared Rex, under 6 months old, who came to Reno Rats when his previous owner was no longer able to care for him and some of the female rats he had been living with.

Since arriving, Alfie has spent the last month with us completing our health observation and temperament evaluation, and we’re happy to say he has passed everything with flying colors. ❤️

This boy is an absolute sweetheart. Alfie is healthy, gentle, docile and incredibly easy to handle. He’s comfortable interacting with children, has had exposure to dogs, and has taken everything we’ve introduced him to in stride. He’s just an all-around lovely little rat who deserves a wonderful family of his own.

🏡 What Alfie needs in his forever home:

Most importantly, Alfie cannot live alone. His new home will need to have other compatible male rats for him to bond and socialize with, or appropriately spayed female companions. We’ll be looking for a home that can provide him with the companionship, housing and care he deserves.

Alfie’s adoption fee has been reduced, but not waived. Our priority isn’t making money from his placement — it’s making sure his new family is prepared and committed to providing him with a safe, appropriate, lifelong home.

🥕🌾 Another easy rat food find! 🐭

I spotted this frozen Multigrain Blend with Vegetables at Trader Joe's and immediately thought… the rats would LOVE this. 😂

The ingredient list is super simple: peas, carrots, corn, barley, red rice, spelt & zucchini. I microwaved it, let it cool completely, and mixed it right into their regular Oxbow lab blocks. Needless to say, dinner was a hit!

One of my favorite things about feeding rats is how many healthy whole foods they can enjoy. 🥦

A quality, nutritionally complete lab block should always make up the foundation of your rats diet. Treats and extras shouldn’t shouldn’t replace your foundation. Adding appropriate fresh, frozen or cooked foods can be a great way to provide:

🌾 Different grains & nutrients
🥕 New tastes, smells & textures
🧠 Mental stimulation
🐾 Natural foraging behaviors
💧 Additional moisture from fresh foods
🍽️ Variety in an otherwise predictable diet

Enrichment doesn’t always have to mean buying another toy! Food is enrichment, too. Rats are naturally curious little foragers, so offering safe foods in different forms gives them something to investigate, choose, carry away and enjoy.

Tip when shopping: frozen veggie and grain blends can be an easy option, but always flip the bag over and read the ingredients. Look for simple, rat-safe ingredients without added sauces, heavy seasoning or lots of salt.

There are SO many ways to make life interesting for these little guys while still keeping their staple diet nutritionally balanced. 💛

Hi friends! Cookie and Sausage here. We are a couple of sisters looking for a forever place to land. We have been here at the Rattery since birth and we are 5 months old. We are smaller females for our age. We have been told we are really good girls and have nice temperaments… whatever that means… 🤪 we just like to have fun and snag pieces of leftover brunch when we can. You know girl things. Anyway we are making our escape from the Rattery. We have been told since we have a special Harley coat that it makes it hard for us to be moms. That’s fine. That sounds boring. So we are looking for a pet home with or without rats. Either way we will get along. Send a message if you want to take us home! 🖤🐀

Hi guys Noctis and Solis here. We found our way back to Reno Rats through no fault of our own. Our person had some life circumstances change and they did the right thing by getting us back to the Rattery. We are almost 9 months old and we are just chunky boys who like treats and snuggles. We are brothers. So you know we wanna go home together. We would be sad to be split up. We like car rides. Exploring new places and laying around. Hobbies include licking your fingers and taking long naps. Please take us home. 🥹🙏

🐀 💬 Toast is here for some updates from Reno Rats

First, we just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported Reno Rats and patiently waited through some delays over the past several months. Life threw a few unexpected health and family challenges my way, which caused a bit of a slowdown in our breeding program on my end, and I truly appreciate everyone’s kindness and understanding through that process.

With that being said, we’re officially getting things moving again, and are hoping to get the remaining waitlisters taken care of before our summer break.

Right now we currently have:
🐾 3 litters on the ground
🐾 1 older litter (3 weeks old)
🐾 2 litter that have been born in the last 24 hours 
🐾 and we’re hoping for 2 additional litters before our summer breeding break

Over the next couple of weeks we will be working on refreshing and reorganizing the waitlist to make sure everyone currently on it is still interested in adopting.

📩 If you are currently on the waitlist, please keep an eye out for a text message from us! We will be asking everyone to confirm whether they’d still like to remain active on the list. Due to the need to really clean up the list we will be asking for a timely response in order for you to remain active.

We completely understand that timelines, life circumstances, and plans may have changed in the meantime, absolutely no hard feelings at all if so 💛

🐭✨ THIS is why genetics matter, even in small pets.

These babies don’t run and hide when the cage opens. They run TO the door to greet me, investigate my hands, and politely provide their complimentary “rat manicures” 💅🐀

One thing I’m very passionate about in breeding is temperament. While thoughtful handling and positive socialization are important, there’s also a major genetic component to confidence and friendliness in rats.

These babies actually haven’t been heavily handled or “over-socialized.” In fact, good breeders should intentionally avoid excessive handling very young babies because constant handling can sometimes mask naturally nervous genetics.

Instead, these babies have simply had:
✨ calm, appropriate interactions
✨ positive exposure to humans
✨ a stable environment
✨ generations of carefully selected temperaments behind them

And the result is babies that are naturally curious, confident, and eager to interact with people.

There’s a big difference between:
🐭 a rat that tolerates handling because it’s constantly desensitized
and
🐭 a rat that is genetically inclined to be social, calm, and human-oriented from the start.

Of course every rat is an individual, but thoughtful breeding truly does matter 💛

And yes, the little finger nibbling is completely normal exploratory behavior, not aggression. Around here we call it a tiny rat manicure 💅✨
