What’s in a name??

Many people ask how we name our hounds.

In the Myopia kennel we name our puppies to reflect their liniage. The first letter of their name is the first letter of their sires name. The second letter of their name is the second letter of their dams name.

So puppies from Abbott and Gracious’s litters names start with AR. Arlette and Arbella.

Who names each puppy varies from year to year- for the 2024 litters we auctioned the naming rights for our RU litter at our fall Hunt Ball. The AR litter was named by two pillars of our community- Ann Getchell and Susanna Colloredo- Mansfeld.

Who doesn’t love a party??

The Myopia hounds were THRILLED to es**rt guests from the Club House to the party tent on the evening celebrating Myopias 150th anniversary!

As the oldest drag hunt in the US, the hounds and the tradition of foxhunting is a key part of Myopias rich history.

When our loyal hounds no longer want to participate in hunting- we work hard to find them retirement homes in the community.

Myopia Sully is a recent retiree- who’s now embarking on his second career as a Therapy Hound!

Please help us congratulate him (and his wonderful owner Amy!) on graduating from his canine good citizenship course!!

I’ve never hunted before, but I want to come to hound exercises- what do I need to know?

Hound exercises are the most informal aspect of fox hunting. You and your horse should arrive prior to the 7:30am check in time, both outfitted with safe tack and your helmet!

Find one of our AMAZING check in people (Mary Milgrom, Amy Camerlin or Lucy Richardson), give them your name and your capping fee for the day ($25, if you’re not a subscriber). This is also a great opportunity to let them know that you’re new- they will introduce you to everyone!

Your outfit for hound exercises is casual but tidy (conservative color pants, polo shirt) and your tack for the ride should be well fitting, in good condition, and effective for you and your horse.

Now it’s time to have some fun! After any announcements the Huntsman and hounds will move off and the field will follow along for approximately an hour of walking and trotting in the schooling field!

Following the ride, and after the Huntsman blows home refreshments will be served in the shade.

Summer hound exercises are an excellent opportunity to get your horse out in a group, socialize, and beat the heat! Theres even snacks!
