Eloise and Debbie Stone recently visited Dr. Berg from our Zoo/Exotics team—and honestly, they may have won cutest patients of the day 🐰💕

Eloise (the up-eared cutie) came in for a recheck after some abnormal bloodwork was found a few weeks prior. The good news? Her values showed significant improvement! Dr. Berg even made it a point to let Eloise “see” just how much better things were looking at her recheck appointment.

Debbie (the lop-eared cutie) came along for moral support and was clearly taking her role very seriously 🥹

This sweet boy is Luka 🐶🤎, and he has been a "derm-ergency" since he was a puppy!

Luka is a labrador retriever and is now two-years-old... but when he was just a young pup, he presented to CCVS with juvenile cellulitis aka "puppy strangles". This is a rare, non-contagious immune-mediated skin disease in puppies (usually 3 weeks - 6 months old) that causes rapid muzzle/face swelling, pustules and a fever. It is serious and potentially fatal if untreated. Treatment involves immunosuppressive steroids (like prednisone) and often antibiotics, with a good prognosis if caught early. Thankfully we caught it in time and helped clear up his skin (see the last photo for what the poor little guy looked like before treatment).

Recently, Luka visited our dermatology team for intradermal allergy testing to check for environmental allergies. After testing, we discovered he's allergic to certain types of grasses, weeds, trees, mites, insects, and even his own cat sisters! 😲 After getting his first round of treatment he is feeling much better! Luka will have to continue with this treatment long-term, but he remains his happy, playful, silly self while being a little less itchy and uncomfortable!

Make sure to scroll through to not only see Dr. Emery performing allergy testing during his latest visit, but for some incredible before and after photos of Luka as a puppy vs now -- proving that a quick diagnosis and treatment can be life-changing.

Meet Minx 🐈‍⬛, an 8-year-old Domestic Shorthair who recently "graduated" from our Internal Medicine Department! Minx first came to CCVS with stubborn upper respiratory issues. When standard antibiotics didn't provide relief, our IM and Diagnostic Imaging teams teamed up to dig deeper.

CT scan and nasopharyngoscopy (performed at CCVS-Buzzards Bay) revealed the root of the problem: a congenital soft palate defect causing secondary nasopharyngeal stenosis (narrowing of the area behind her nasal passages due to scar tissue). Thanks to a coordinated effort between our Internal Medicine and Surgery teams, the defect was repaired and nasopharyngeal ballooning was performed. We are thrilled to report that Minx is doing wonderfully, breathing easily, and is back to her happy, normal self!

Meet Gwen 💚

This charming chameleon came to see our Zoo & Exotic Medicine Services (ZEMS) team after her family noticed she was gasping and showing signs of what appeared to be respiratory distress. After thorough evaluation, the cause turned out to be something quite different—Gwen had reproductive disease!

Reproductive disease (whether egg-bound or in follicular stasis) can quickly become serious in reptiles and may lead to significant health complications if not addressed promptly. Thankfully, Gwen received the care she needed, was successfully spayed, and is now thriving at home.

Cases like Gwen’s are an important reminder that subtle changes in breathing, appetite, behavior, or posture in exotic pets may indicate underlying medical issues. If you’re ever questioning whether something seems “off” with your pet, trust your instincts and don’t hesitate to give us a call or reach out to our Zoo/Exotics team at [email protected].

Charizard 🐾 is a Labrador mix who is about 7 years old and had been struggling with chronic gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) for years. His flare-ups were happening multiple times a month, often leading to discomfort, vomiting, and a tendency to eat things he shouldn’t. At one point, he couldn’t even be left alone for short periods of time.

After working closely with Dr. Carvalho on our Internal Medicine team, Charizard’s care plan was adjusted to include a high-quality, GI-supportive, low-fat diet, along with a few lifestyle changes tailored to his needs.

The difference has been incredible—he’s had just one full flare-up in the past 9 months.

Stories like Charizard’s are a great reminder that chronic conditions don’t have to mean constant setbacks. With the right plan and support, many pets can find real, lasting relief—and get back to living comfortably at home. 💙

Tomorrow’s the day! 🏥🩸🐾

Join us for our Annual Canine Blood Drive and help make a life-saving difference for pets in our community.

This event is a screening day to enroll eligible pups into our Blood Bank program—giving them the opportunity to help save the lives of critically ill patients in the future. Please be sure to review full eligibility details, as there are specific requirements for pups to qualify as donors.

📅 Sunday, April 12
⏰ 10am–2pm
📍 Bourne Police Station

This event is held in partnership with the Bourne Police Department and takes place on the anniversary of the tragic event of K9 Nero and late Sgt. Sean Gannon, in their honor. Through our Blood Bank program, Nero was able to receive life-saving donated blood—just one of many patients we’ve been able to help that came through our doors in critical condition.

👉Whether you’re planning to attend or just want to learn more, you can find full details here: https://www.facebook.com/share/1aZrn5s27c/

👉If you’ve ever considered having your pup become a blood donor, or have any questions, we would love to hear from you. You can reach our Blood Bank team at [email protected] or learn more here: https://capecodvetspecialists.com/blood-bank/

Every donation has the potential to save a life—and it all starts with pups like yours (if eligible) ❤️

We hope to see you there!
