How To Prevent Reactivity

Believe it or not, no leash set-up prevents reactivity.

I get it, the labels + photos on the no-pull tools in the pet stores promise that your walks will be fun, "easy," + effortless.

However, what is missed is that it's the handler who has the power to create the easy walks that you have been dreaming of.

It's all in the way we hold the leash, our confidence, our understanding that we are the leader rather than the opposite, the fact that our dog will succeed far better when he is by our side rather than far ahead of us, + the understanding that our dogs aren't being "stubborn" or are "untrainable."

It's just that they are looking for clear + consistent guidance that they can rely on every single time.

And if they don't get the leadership they need, they will exhibit behaviors that we don't want.

Calm Walks Start At Home

I disagree.

If it weren't for dogs, I probably wouldn't take the time to notice the architecture, art, & upcycling ideas in the Rollinsford neighborhood so I thought I'd share the "hidden" gems I noticed & perhaps inspire you to take pictures of what what you smile on your next walk with your dog(s).

"Anyone can walk a BIG old dog WITHOUT pulling!"

"Maybe walk an energetic young dog to make your skills look more convincing"

What many don't know are the details we worked thru prior to walking calmly without pulling + reactivity.

One such plan of action was to swap out 6 + feet long leashes (including retractable leashes) in favor of shorter leashes (including traffic leads) to help make walks more fluid + manageable.

Dogs do not "grow out of" behaviors (such as pulling) on their own. They need our help + that's where I come in so I can tweak it which in turn makes dog parents life easier when they walk their dogs when I am not on the schedule.

Why should walking be a daily priority?

All dogs no matter the size, weather (except when it's dangerously cold or hot), need walks including even if they have a backyard.
Dogs are a migratory species aka they were born to walk.
In all of my years as a professional, I have never once met a dog who doesn't like to walk even though I hear differently.
