🐾 Skunked? Don't Panic! Here's What to Do! 🦨

A curious nose 👃 and a skunk don't mix! If your pup has been sprayed, acting quickly can make a BIG difference.

✅ DO:

🌳 -Keep your pet outside if possible to prevent the odor from spreading through your home or your vehicle.

✋️ -Wear gloves before handling your pet.

👁 -If they were sprayed directly in the face, gently flush the eyes with cool to lukewarm water—about 70–85°F (21–29°C) continuously for 10–15 minutes, especially if the pet was sprayed directly in the eyes. OR sterile saline- being careful to wet as little of the coat as possible.

🔥 -Warm or hot water – can increase irritation and may make the oils spread more easily across the face and coat.

🐕 -Prevent your pet from rubbing their eyes.

💧 -If you're using a sink, hose, or shower:
• Use a gentle, low-pressure stream.
• Let the water flow from the inside corner of the eye outward so you don't wash the irritant into the other eye or deeper into the tear duct.

🚑 -Contact your veterinarian if the eyes remain red, painful, swollen, cloudy, or your pet keeps squinting after flushing, has difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, vomiting, or appears unusually uncomfortable.

🧽 -Blot excess spray from the coat with paper towels if it's still wet.

⚠️- What you should not do:

❌️ Don't put dish soap or shampoo in or around the eyes.
❌️ Don't assume the irritation will resolve on its own if your pet can't comfortably open their eyes.
❌ Don't use tomato juice—it doesn't neutralize skunk spray and usually just leaves you with a dog that smells like skunk and tomatoes.
❌️ Don't use hydrogen peroxide or homemade de-skunk solutions near the eyes or coat.
❌️ Don't bathe your pet with regular shampoo first. Skunk oils are extremely oily, and plain shampoo alone won't remove them effectively.

💡 Did You Know?
Skunk spray is an oily sulfur-based compound called a thiol. The longer it sits on your pet's coat, the more difficult it becomes to remove.
The sooner your pet is treated, the better the results!
