SPADE UPDATE: This past Saturday, I sat on Spade’s back for the very first time. I wanted to see if we could walk l around the arena, but he tensed up. Instead of pushing him, I just sat there, staying as calm as possible, giving soft rubs and soft good boys. Once he relaxed, I dismounted. He wasn't ready to move forward, and I wasn't going to force it. We’ve been doing so well on this journey, and taking things slow is exactly what we both need. Honestly, I am gaining my confidence back right alongside him.
Last night, Post-Surgery Day 111, we tried again. Just so you know before I mount any horse, I make sure the horse can turn on the forehand, turn on the hind end, back up, flex his head and neck laterally, side pass, and stop. It tells me if the horse is focused me, and not distracted by environment. I recommend anyone who wants a good relationship with their horse to do some of these maneuvers before they mount. It was taught to me many years ago by well-established trainer.
Once mounted, it only took a few cues to get him moving forward slowly. By the time we finished our first lap around the pen, he had settled into a nice, steady medium walk, and you'll see we even managed a little bit of trotting. I can truly feel a positive difference in him. I'm praying we are on the right path—thank God for this horse!
