We originally decided to train Elli to track our own wounded deer, because as much as one practices, s**t happens.
Yesterday/today, was one of those s**t times. We would have absolutely never have found this deer without Elli. 1.5 mile total track, no beds, sporadic blood.
Before last light, Matt took a confident shot at a nice buck we had on camera. He waited a bit before checking out the hit site and did not see his arrow.
We waited an hour before starting Elli on the track. We thought he ran across the road and shouldn't be far. She was determined and kept us on the line for .9 of a mile. We didn't have permission to go on the next property so we pulled out.
At home, we talked about the shot and blood, and how nothing made sense! Very frustrating.
This morning, we went back to the hit site and saw the arrow which showed intestines and (?), called our mentor who also was also mind blown by the situation.
Thankfully, today we got permission from lots of awesome neighbors! We set out this afternoon and got her back on where we left off. The terrain was awful and it was not an easy process. Once she locked on the line, she pulled us in the right direction. It's tough to trust your dog, when you don't any evidence yourself!
But as usual, she was right. She brought me to a creekbed while Matt stood at last blood. I asked is this right? And she answered by pulling the lead. Then I saw specks of blood, what a relief! I looked up and saw him laying there ahead! I shouted to Matt to come quick so he could watch her get her reward of tugging on him.
Team work makes the dream work!
