June is National Foster a Pet Month, and we are so grateful to the families that welcome our most fragile and special cases into their homes. We currently have over 140 animals in foster care right now, from orphaned kittens to pups needing some extra TLC. Several studies show that an animal, especially dogs, who receive foster care and kennel breaks find their adoptive homes more quickly.

We are always looking for new families to join our 'Foster Roster', whether for a sleepover, weekend break, or until an animal is adopted. To learn more about fostering, visit our website to apply and get started!

Some kitties that come to KHS do not care for human interaction. But that doesn't mean their life should have any less value - have you ever heard of Barn Cats?

Also known as a 'working cat', our Barn Cat Program is designed to help feral and community cats find safe, outdoor homes in barns, warehouses, farms, and other locations for those that are not candidates for our traditional adoption programs. Have a rodent problem, but don't want to risk hurting other wildlife? A Barn Cat could be the purrfect solution!

We have some ready to find their next adventure, learn more about our Barn Cat Program on our website!

The kitties at KHS will be THRILLED to hear...

INABA Foods, the makers of Churu (a cat's favorite treat), donated thousands of tubes of the yummiest enrichment tools and supplies! Through our Greater Good Charities partnership, we distribute these donations to over two dozen food banks and rescue organizations across the Puget Sound, ensuring all pets that need food have access.

Thank you INABA Foods, Greater Good Charities, and of course our storage and distribution partner, Bremerton Foodline!

As we prepare for the summer holiday season, please take some time to consider your pet's safety πŸŽ‡

For your pets, the weeks surrounding the Fourth of July can come with loud scary noises, unfamiliar people in their home, and other scenarios that may be overwhelming. This can cause even the most well-mannered dog to act out of character and potentially, become lost or hurt.

To help keep your pets safe:

🐾 Keep your pets in a safe and secured area
🐾 Avoid bringing pets to fireworks displays
🐾 Offer plenty of love, enrichment, and pet-safe distractions
🐾 Never leave your pet unattended
🐾 Keep your pet out of the car
🐾 Make sure your pet is wearing updated and accurate identification and their license is up to date
🐾 Consult with your regular veterinarian if you pet may need additional aid

Together, we can keep lost pets out of the shelter and home safe during the summer holidays β€οΈπŸ’™

Fingers Duke is a wonderful partner of ours, and if you join us this evening at Pints for Pets at the Brass Kraken, you'll be the first to get your paws on our new merch!

This is our sweet friend Leah, and she has a very special story ❀️ Found abandoned by our Animal Control Officers, 8-year-old Leah took a bit of time to warm up to new people here at the shelter. After having a large non-cancerous mass removed and some other medical treatment, Leah moved to foster where she is clearly thriving. Getting lots of love and enjoying being a good couch potato, Leah is looking for her next adventure.

Because Leah is in foster, please email [email protected] to schedule a meet-and-greet. To learn more about Leah and other adoptable animals, visit our website!

We visited Crownhill Elementary yesterday, and the adoptable pets got a special gift! Thanks to the 2nd graders in Mrs. Witherell's class, the pets have a new profile picture to sport on their kennels, showcased for hopeful adopters. Their artistic talents display the best qualities of each of our animals ✨
