The Mindful Equestrian

The Mindful Equestrian Performance coaching for equestrians wanting to achieve more positive results in all aspects of the Hunter/Jumper lessons and clinics.

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in every moment, not worrying about what was or what might be. A mindful rider is able to focus on what is happening right now with themselves and their horse, maintaining low stress and a higher ability for top performance. My clinics combine my 35+ years of experience in the hunter/jumper industry (AHSA/USEF, IHSA, Equine Science Professor Hunt Seat M

orrisville State College), mindfulness training and coach training and certification (International Coach Academy) to give riders strategies and tools for better mental focus and riding success. Each rider is considered individually and supported with the tools that will work best for them. The benefits from the performance coaching can also be carried into day to day life since we mirror the same issues in our riding that we do in other areas of our lives. Mindfulness then becomes a whole life practice and success tool. Performance coaching for riders of all disciplines who want more a positive experience whenever riding and competing. Group seminars available as well as private phone coaching sessions. Add a performance coaching seminar to your riding clinic. Over 35 years experience training hunters/jumpers and students.

This quote really hits home for me—especially as a business owner and trainer. It’s so easy to stay stuck staring at what didn’t work out, what we thought should have happened. But sometimes the real opportunity is already sitting there, just out of view, waiting for us to shift our focus.

Whether it’s in the barn, in your business, or in life—don’t miss what’s next because you’re still stuck on what didn’t work.

A quick note that I’m going to take a short break starting Tuesday June 2nd from my regular scheduled social media posts for the next couple of weeks.

I have back-to-back busy weekends with clinics/judging, and I want to give myself the space to focus on the work in front of me and keep my energy where it needs to be.

I’ll still pop in with short videos or thoughts when something comes up — because those are usually the things that feel most natural and timely anyway.

Sometimes the mindful choice is simply adjusting the plan, taking a little pressure off, and staying present with what’s right in front of you.

Celebrating small victories while riding or working with horses is crucial for fostering positive growth and progress towards your goals. It's all too easy to fixate on distant objectives, forgetting to appreciate the daily improvements that occur. Examples of small accomplishments include clean canter transitions, a more relaxed horse, your horse standing quietly at the mounting block, or a smooth ride without stirrups. Remember, when working towards your goals, it's all about progress, not perfection.

Focusing on small victories empowers and motivates you, cultivates a resilient and positive mindset, and encourages ongoing growth and improvement. Some ways to celebrate these achievements are by journaling daily, sharing your victories with friends and family, or treating yourself to something special.

Start recognizing your small victories today and build a positive mindset! I'd love to hear about your accomplishments, so please share them in the comments below.

I’m currently booking clinics and judging dates for the second half of 2026, with some availability from July through December, and I’m also starting to book into 2027.

I’m available for:

• Riding clinics
• Schooling hunter/equitation and jumper show judging
• IEA show judging
• Talks and presentations
• One-on-one or group coaching

My clinic work combines decades of experience as a trainer, instructor, and judge with mindset coaching to help riders build confidence, improve position and technique, and develop a better connection with their horses.

Clinics can be tailored for adult riders, junior riders, IEA teams, college teams, and mixed-level barns.

If you’re interested in scheduling a clinic or booking a judging date, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to look at possible dates.

I’ve been reading more about Stoic philosophy lately, and one idea I really like is the dichotomy of control.

The basic idea is that we can’t control everything around us.

As riders, we can’t control the judge, the other horses in the ring, the weather, the schedule, or how everyone else rides.

As business owners, we can’t control how every client responds, what they think, or what decisions they make.

But we can work on our own response.

We can notice when we’re reacting instead of responding. We can work on our mindset. We can build awareness. We can come back to what we actually have influence over.

That doesn’t mean it’s easy or instant. It takes practice.

But the more we try to control all the external things, the more frustrated we get.

A better question is: What can I work on within myself right now?

When we compare ourselves to others' success, we only see one side of the story. We often forget that everyone faces struggles and weaknesses. Don't be too hard on yourself, as you are not alone in this. Keep in mind that success takes effort and time, and we all have our own unique journey to follow.

Hone your skills on the basics and work on one thing at a time. Create a good foundation and steadily build from there. Let go of trying to manage too many things and making things more complicated than they need to be. Our brains do best working on one thing at a time.

Be curious about riding and life. Always keep trying to understand why. Why did it work or why didn’t it? Ask what can I try differently and give it a try. Mistakes will happen but you will learn and grow.⠀⠀⠀⠀

A curious mind will again help you discover what is going on. Keep your mind curious and opened to looking for causes for what is really happening with both you and your horse. A sense of curiosity makes riding so much more fun and you will retain more of what you have learned because you learned it through self-discovery and analysis. A curious mindset makes life more interesting! So when you are riding don’t look for all the answers to be given to you. Start asking why, how, what, when and where. Grow your curiosity!
