The Mindful Equestrian

The Mindful Equestrian Performance coaching for equestrians wanting to achieve more positive results in all aspects of the Hunter/Jumper lessons and clinics.

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in every moment, not worrying about what was or what might be. A mindful rider is able to focus on what is happening right now with themselves and their horse, maintaining low stress and a higher ability for top performance. My clinics combine my 35+ years of experience in the hunter/jumper industry (AHSA/USEF, IHSA, Equine Science Professor Hunt Seat M

orrisville State College), mindfulness training and coach training and certification (International Coach Academy) to give riders strategies and tools for better mental focus and riding success. Each rider is considered individually and supported with the tools that will work best for them. The benefits from the performance coaching can also be carried into day to day life since we mirror the same issues in our riding that we do in other areas of our lives. Mindfulness then becomes a whole life practice and success tool. Performance coaching for riders of all disciplines who want more a positive experience whenever riding and competing. Group seminars available as well as private phone coaching sessions. Add a performance coaching seminar to your riding clinic. Over 35 years experience training hunters/jumpers and students.

he desire for control often arises from a need for safety and stability. It's a way of hoping to prevent mistakes and maintain a sense of stability. However, life is unpredictable, and despite our efforts, we can't control everything. Mistakes are inevitable, and unexpected changes are a part of life's fabric.

While we can't control every external factor, we do have control over our responses. It's crucial to react thoughtfully rather than impulsively. Reactive behavior tends to be laden with emotions like anger, frustration, and fear. Thoughtful responses come from sitting with our emotions, then calmly devising solutions. This approach fosters learning from mistakes and challenges, leading to growth in riding skills and feel.

A rider focused on control tends to become demanding and rigid. This often leads to a breakdown in communication with the horse and a lack of sensitivity. Despite one's best efforts, things can still go awry. When this occurs, a controlling person can quickly become agitated, stressed, and anxious.

Shifting perspective from rigid control to an open, accepting mindset acknowledges that bumps in the road are inevitable. This shift brings a sense of freedom and ease. Thoughtful responses replace knee-jerk reactions. With this mindset, riders become receptive to learning from mistakes and attuned to their horse's signals. Flexibility, freedom, and enhanced feel replace stress and anxiety. Imagine the improvement in your rides!

Start noticing instances when you're grasping for control. Change won't happen overnight, so take small steps and celebrate progress. The results will undoubtedly be rewarding!

It's so easy to get caught up in what others may be thinking, particularly when others make it a point to let you know they are judging you. It happens too often in the equestrian world that people become judgmental and opinionated about others. When that happens, remember that it really is about something in themselves that they feel is a problem. It's not really about you.

Show up each day and do the best you can in each moment. Some days that is better than others. Once that is done, let go of worrying about it. Learn from mistakes, grow and move on to the next thing.

"What If?"
By default, our brains have evolved to a negative bias. This protected our ancestors from danger and is still beneficial at times in the modern world. But today, we are so bombarded with so many stimuli and choices and do not get to act on our fight or flight response. So instead, we are filled with adrenaline that we don't use up. We then get stuck in place with anxiety thinking of all the negative "what ifs?" that prevent us from tacking action. Instead, imagine all of the "what ifs?" that will occur if you don't take action.⠀

"The real “what ifs” to ask ourselves are “what if” I don’t step out of my comfort zone? What opportunities will I miss? In what way will I stop growing? What
possibilities will pass me by?"

We can be so tough on ourselves in all areas of our lives. It is easy to stay stuck dwelling on regrets and beat ourselves up for past mistakes. Take time to be compassionate to yourself, forgive yourself and learn from mistakes so you can move forward. We are all human and perfection is unattainable. Mistakes are part of living.

What an amazing weekend! I traveled to Edinboro, Pa on Thursday to teach a clinic on Friday at the Erie Hunt and Saddle Club and judge their show on Saturday and Sunday. What a wonderful group of riders and horses and beautifully run show! Busy and big show with two rings going all day and a hunter Derby that I got to judge with Lauren Prisuta with 30 entries to finish under the lights on Saturday! Phew! Busy time but loved it all! Thanks Lindsay Filley and Lori Herrmann for inviting me back and running such a wonderful event and fun filled weekend! I love all your clients and the great people who were spectators and volunteers! And I got a beautiful gift bag at the end of it all! They know how to run a great show and treat everyone well!

I still have a few weekends open for clinics and judging for this year and am booking for next year if you are interested!

It's easy to fixate on the technicalities of riding, losing sight of the feel and connection with your horse. Sure, the details matter, but endlessly drilling for perfection can be a dead-end road. You find yourself frustrated and disconnected, rather than feeling in sync with your horse. Sound familiar?

In lessons, it's tempting to lean heavily on your instructor for all the answers. While guidance is essential, this dependency can stifle your own sense of feel and intuition.

So what happens if you ease up on that quest for perfection? What if you dial back on your instructor dependence and try to work out some kinks on your own? Shifting your focus from rigid control to open-minded discovery can be liberating. It makes your lessons more rewarding and gives you the space to grow outside of formal instruction. You'll learn more, have a better time, and actually look forward to your rides.

If we want to make changes we have to take on the responsibility to do the work to make those changes. The choice has to come from from within us to create the success we desire. We can get support and guidance from others but we have to be invested in doing the work.
