Samuel Pack Elliott (born August 9, 1944) is one of America’s most iconic actors, recognized for his deep baritone voice, trademark mustache, and rugged cowboy persona. Over the course of his career, he has earned major accolades, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and a National Board of Review Award.
Elliott received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Star Is Born (2018), in which he portrayed the older brother and manager of Bradley Cooper’s character. That performance also brought him nominations from the Golden Globe Awards and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Later, he delivered a memorable portrayal of Shea Brennan in the TV miniseries 1883 (2021–2022), which earned him the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance.
His career began with small roles in The Way West (1967), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), and guest appearances in Mission: Impossible and Gunsmoke. His first lead role came in the thriller Frogs (1972), followed by his breakthrough performance in Lifeguard (1977). In the 1980s, Elliott starred in the critically acclaimed Mask (1985) and later in Louis L’Amour adaptations such as Conagher (1991), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Elliott continued to appear in major productions, including Gettysburg (1993), Tombstone (1993), The Big Lebowski (1998), Hulk (2003), and Ghost Rider (2007). In recent years, he has been praised for his roles in Justified (2015), The Ranch (2016–2020), and the independent drama The Hero (2017).
