A true dog lover, Samuel Pack Elliott (born August 9, 1944) is an American actor celebrated for his iconic mustache, deep, commanding voice, and rugged good looks. His career has been marked by numerous accolades, notably a National Board of Review Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Elliott has earned major nominations, including an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Emmy Awards. His impactful performance as Bobby Maine in the musical drama A Star Is Born (2018) resulted in an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, in addition to nominations from the Screen Actors Guild and Critics' Choice Movie Awards, and winning the National Board of Review Award. He was also honored with the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie for his role as Shea Brennan in the television series 1883 (2021–2022).
Elliott’s early career featured small parts in Westerns such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and The Way West (1967). After making notable guest appearances on television shows like Gunsmoke and Mission: Impossible, he landed his first starring vehicle, Frogs (1972). The film Lifeguard (1977) represented a significant breakthrough for him. He later co-starred in the successful film Mask (1985) and starred in several film versions of Louis L'Amour's work, including Conagher (1991), which secured a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film, and The Quick and the Dead (1987).
He received his first Primetime Emmy Award nomination and a second Golden Globe nomination for his role in Buffalo Girls (1995). Other important roles in the 1990s include playing Virgil Earp in the Western classic Tombstone (1993) and John Buford in the Civil War drama Gettysburg (1993). In 1998, he captivated audiences as The Stranger in the cult classic The Big Lebowski.
The 2000s saw Elliott take on roles in We Were Soldiers (2002), the comic-book films Hulk (2003) and Ghost Rider (2007), and earn a Critics' Choice Television Award for his guest role on the series Justified (2015). He began starring in the Netflix series The Ranch in 2016, and subsequently led the cast of the comedy film The Hero.
