Your dog’s skin can talk to you. 🐕 Tracking the signs tells you exactly when it's time to see the vet.
As pet parents, we hate seeing our furry friends uncomfortable. When they start scratching, chewing, or developing strange spots, it’s easy to panic. Is it just a seasonal allergy, or is it something more serious?
Take a look at our handy Veterinary Guide to Skin Problems chart to help identify what’s going on underneath all that fur! 🔍
Here are a few common red flags to look out for:
🔴 Erythema (Redness & Inflammation): If their skin looks angry, flushed, or warm to the touch, it’s a major sign of irritation or an underlying allergic reaction.
💧 Pustules: These small, pus-filled bumps can indicate a bacterial skin infection (like pyoderma) that usually requires a vet-prescribed treatment to clear up.
💔 Fissures: Deep, painful cracks—especially on their sensitive paw pads—can easily become infected if left untreated.
❄️ Scales & Flakes: Severe dandruff or dry, flaky skin can be a sign of poor nutrition, mites, or an endocrine issue.
When should you call the vet? 🩺
If you notice open sores, oozing, a foul odor, or if your pup is in obvious discomfort and can't stop scratching, it is definitely time to get a professional opinion. Catching skin issues early means faster relief for your pup (and fewer vet bills for you!).
