This little gal has made some really cool improvement in this club foot since last summer.

When I started working with her she was pretty tender on this front foot. It had very little concavity and she was wearing the foot down significantly in a 6 week cycle. There was even a period of time where I really had no foot to work with.

Her owner came to me with the Perfect Hoof Wear application and we gave it a try. Perfect Hoof Wear is a casting material that is slightly more plyable then standard cast wrap so it allows the hoof capsule to still have a small amount of flex. My understanding is its primary function is protection for the foot in place of standard shoes. We used this application for 4 consecutive 4 week cycles and had fabulous results. We were finally able to grow some foot and start corrective trimming. We are now on our 3rd cycle out of the wraps.

This mare now has a more correct hoof pastern access and is moving more comfortably than when we started. She has gained a lot of sole depth and increased the size and proportion of her frog.(I wish I had a before of the bottom of her foot) All in all this is a win in my book.

Frustrated horse owner? Horse losing shoes? Want to switch farriers? Take a deep breath.
Weather conditions in central Virginia seem to have reached the trifecta of lost shoes/damaged hooves. Equilox is flying off the shelves for glue on shoes and hoof repairs. It's not just your farrier.
It's also the start grumpy farrier season. The workload is up, the temperature is up, and flies are atrocious. Your farrier is fighting dehydration and overheating everyday. They have been je**ed on by horses who are intolerant of flies. They are receiving texts and calls at impolite hours. They are getting sticker shock when they purchase supplies. They are physically and mentally exhausted, and their bodies are sore.
What can you do? Try to set your horse and your farrier up for success. Is your horse spending lots of time in the pond to get away from bugs and heat? Not so good for hoof quality. Fly spray is expensive, so you're using as little as possible, except when you're riding? Soggy hooves stomping on hard ground isn't a good combination. Trying to push the appointment a little longer? Not a good idea in the summer.
Do you have a fan for your farrier? Shade and breeze go a long way in keeping your farrier functional, and a strong fan has the added benefit of chasing away flies.
Do you have to lead the horses through a mud puddle to get through the gate? Bring them in early. Hosing mud off your horse as the farrier arrives isn't appreciated. Most would rather deal with dry mud than wet legs.
Apply a fly spray early. Another application may be needed during shoeing, but your farrier does not need to hold onto wet, fly spray drenched legs all day. Be mindful if your fly spray is oil based. It can make legs, hands, and tools slippery. Ask your farrier their preference. It often helps to spray a leg again once the hoof is done. The fly spray stays on the leg, not on the farrier, and the horse may stand quieter for next hoof.
Cold beverages, ice, cold water soaked towels, and dry "sweat towels" are nice.
What are your suggestions to help your horse and farrier?

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to apply a lateral extension modification—and I absolutely loved the challenge!

This particular horse toes in on the front end, which causes him to land heavily on the outside of his feet. After recently losing a shoe, his hoof wore down more than usual, especially on that lateral side. When he first walked off the trailer, you could see his foot rolling sharply outward with each step.

After a proper trim and fitting a lateral extension, his landing became noticeably more balanced, and he moved with much more comfort.

I'm incredibly grateful to the owner for their trust and the chance to help this horse feel and move better. Every horse teaches me something new, and I’m thankful for that!

Here are before and after pictures of a gelding that was a little over due.
In the next cycle or two I will be able to bring his toes back to re align the hoof-patern access on his front feet. While his hind feet were just as long they did not distort and were able to be trimmed back to normal in one go.

Practice makes perfect. Clips are a good way to warm up after a break from forging.
