Sweet female lilac Merle Great Dane. She was pretty sleepy and wanted to snooze rather than take pictures. I keep telling her some day she will have her own person in her own big bed to snuggle every single night.. they are out there somewhere.

Blue female Great Dane

This show stopper girl is a blue harlequin Great Dane.
Blue is a the base color of her coat and is the “slate” color. It is a recessive gene( D locus) that must be inherited by both parents in order to express it. This happens when black ( or chocolate) gets masked by the dilution variant MHLP( melanophilan) gene however that’s not the only variants that can produce blues but that’s a whole other post in itself. There are actually 3 different variants. Two copies from any 3 variants will produce blue color.
Blue is not a natural coat variant in wild dogs like wolves but has been selectively bred into many domesticated breeds.
Harlequin is this girls PATTERN. In order for harlequin to be expressed, a dog must inherit a dominate copy of the harlequin mutation( H locus) and a dominate copy of the Merle mutation( M locus). The H mutation removes the background color making the pigment white and enlarges spots. Harlequin is actually a mutation of Merle and cannot be expressed without Merle being present genetically. Her blue eyes comes from the Merle and makes her all the more stunning. Someone will be hitting a gorgeous home run with this genetic masterpiece. She likely also carries mantle but that doesn’t really matter because she will be on a strict spay agreement.

This blue female Great Dane puppy is the sweetest. She is an American/ European cross and thankfully so far is a dry mouth dog who doesn’t drool a lot. She loves my kids and squeaker toys. I hope whoever ends up getting her stays in contact with me and sends me pictures as she grows. 🌹

This blue harlequin Great Dane is such a stunner already. I love her bi-colored eyes. She’s already a princess and she knows it!!
