I tried to deny what I was feeling when I saw the first iteration of this design.

But you can’t deny that which is true in your ❤️.

When I saw this design, I felt a flutter in my stomach.

Surely, they couldn’t have created something that so vividly embodies what I feel about dogs.

But they did.

And when I saw it, I felt it all.

✨I felt the eternal connection.

✨I felt every moment of my life spent learning from and loving dogs.

✨I felt the first time I held Kerouac in my arms as a puppy.

✨And I felt those final moments we had together before she left this world.

✨I felt all the dogs I’ve ever photographed.

✨And all the beautiful people who have loved them.

✨I felt SoulDog.

And I hope you do too.

🪄 More to come when I return in July.

Be well my friends.

❤️ Marika

I’m taking a social media sabbatical in June.

Here’s why:

🌼In May, my mental health sucked, and I think that my heart and soul need a rest from the noise of the digital world.

🌼I’m in the home stretch of my rebrand from Dirtie Dog Photography to SoulDog Creative, and now’s the time for me to turn off all the noise in order to connect more deeply with passion and purpose.

🌼Today, I’m 8 years sober, and maybe because of how hard last year was, it feels like a really big deal.

Every year I celebrate my sobriety with a 🎁 to myself (last year, I bought a hammock, and it’s the best).

This year, I’m giving myself more time.

More time to be my creative self.

More time to connect to the life I fought hard to be able to live.

More time to dream and build and create from my heart.

I’ll be away from here in June, but I’ll still be booking summer 🐶📸 sessions and capturing beautiful portraits of your Soul Dogs in wild places.

You can always reach me via email or fill out my inquiry form on the website.

The new SoulDog Creative brand rolls out in July, but tomorrow I have a special sneak peek planned before I take this break.

If you’ve been feeling the pull to step away from the noise, let this be an inspiration for you to join me in finding the quieter places within ourselves.

Thanks for traveling along with me on this journey, and I’ll see you soon!

❤️ Marika

"Given a choice between grief and nothing, I'd choose grief."
-William Faulkner

Lately, I’ve found a lot of healing through conversations about grief.

These conversations have awakened in me a deeper longing for connection.

It’s the same longing that has inspired most of the work I’ve created throughout my life, and it’s always guided me to beautiful places.

Right now, it’s pointing me toward creating more opportunities to listen and learn.

To reflect and create.

To share and to heal.

I’m not totally sure what the end result of this longing will look like, but for now, it’s a journey through grief with the hopes of providing healing.

If you’ve experienced the loss of a Soul Dog in your lifetime, I’d like to hear your story.

Perhaps together, we can help to bring light to others as they move through their own grief.

The SoulDog Grief Project is a long-term study of how we grieve, how we love, and how we connect through sharing our stories of our Soul Dogs.

Creating portraits that embrace the wild beauty of dogs and the environments we explore together is what I'm channeling right now.

It's one of my favorite things to create for clients, and I'm looking forward to developing this passion even further throughout the next several months.

The next level of photo challenges with Unleashed Education began at the start of February, and the themes are calling for some major creativity.

For the first theme of Emerge, we were asked to capture an image using the element of framing. I had a lot of fun visualizing and creating this portrait of Fern the GSP posed on the limbs of a unique willow tree at Saint Edward State Park.

And I'm pretty excited that we made the Top Ten. :)

BTW... applications to have your own Emerge photo session with me are still open. I'm accepting them for just a little while longer, so if you think you'd like to work with me for one of these awesome challenges, you can apply here: https://form.jotform.com/220254137086047

A few weeks ago, I celebrated 5 years of being a full time 🐶 photographer.

AND

I signed the design proposal to begin the process of rebranding Dirtie Dog Photography to Soul Dog Creative.

Yesterday, I had my first meeting with Chalkbox Creative, and I feel overwhelmed with excitement for everything that's ahead.

Rebranding wasn't a decision I came to lightly. I've worked VERY hard to build my business into what it is today. I've followed my heart every day for the past 5+ years, and I'm really REALLY proud of where it's led me. Over the past year, my heart has been telling me that I have more to build, and that although Dirtie Dog Photography got me this far, it isn't going to take me where I'm headed.

There’s a level of sadness in saying ‘goodbye’ to Dirtie Dog Photography, but it’s because of how much this little business has grown that it’s time to expand in this new direction.

Don’t worry- I’m still doing the same great 📸 work, just creating the foundation to expand into more possibilities. I'll be discovering so many new things throughout this rebrand, and I'm excited to share them when the new brand is fully launched.

I’m nervous about all the little details that will need to be sorted over the next couple of months, but more excited about everything that’s coming next.

And so many great things are coming.

🙋🏼‍♀️Welcome to Soul Dog Creative, friends.

I’m so freaking grateful you’re here. ❤️

On January 17th, 2021, I woke up on my 37th birthday to a trail of 💩💩💩.

Kerouac always knew how to make me laugh.

I miss her today, but I know she’s with me still.

I’m so glad that I booked this 📸 session with @yourfriendtographer a couple of days before Kerouac left us.

They’re never here long enough.

But while they are, they show us how to live.

My heart ached today as I gathered these photos of beloved dogs who passed in 2021.💔

Every one of them was deeply cherished.

And every one of them left their joy-filled mark on the world.🐾

I’m sending my ❤️ out to my clients and friends who shared their hearts with these sweet souls.

Thank you for sharing their stories, and for trusting me to capture them for you.

❤️ If you said goodbye to your beloved pet in the past year, tell me their name, and we will remember them together.

Finding The Soul Dog Journey Project - Dirtie Dog Photography

This year was one long journey of saying goodbye.

I wasn’t ready for it, and I’m not over it. But, sitting here with only one day left of 2021, I can say that because of my journey through grief, I’ve found myself closer to where I’m supposed to be.

I’m going to tell you about this beautiful thing I created called the Soul Dog Journey Project, but first I need to tell you about how I found my way to it.

I ❤️ lazy Sundays.

Snuggling up on the couch with a book or a movie and some snacks is one of my favorite forms of self care.

Of course, having a 🐶 or a 🐈 to snuggle with would make it so much better.

This sweet senior named JJ showed me his best “lounging on the couch” moves during his 📸 session, and I feel inspired to live up to his talents.

🤯Three tidbits about this gal that ya’ll might get a kick out of…

1. I ❤️ the absurd.

Give me the silliest, goofiest, and most joy-filled moments.

For me, it’s the small, silly things (like puns and 🐶🐶 just being dogs) that bring out my best laughs.

If you love to 🤣, we’ll get along great.

2. I’m not afraid of failure, but I am 😱 of bears. And cougars.

It’s true. Building a business comes with all levels of success and failure. It’s part of the journey, and each piece has helped me find my strength.

My very real fear of 🐻 and cougars, however, has kept me from adventuring in places I long to experience.

This is something I plan to work through in 2022. Any and all wisdom from those with knowledge of existing in 🏞 with these incredible creatures is appreciated!

3. I don’t drink alcohol. 🚫🍷🍺🍸🍹🥃🥂🚫

I made the decision 7.5 years ago that in order to be the person I knew I was capable of being, I’d have to stop drinking.

✨And that decision is THE reason that I am able to do the work that I ❤️ while continuing to grow into my best self.

In terms of favorite beverages, I love ☕️! Especially americanos and dirty chai lattes.

Do you relate to any of these things?

I’d love to know something more about you too, so let me know what’s on your mind.

❤️❤️❤️

Final throwback look at Kerouac complete! I enjoyed recreating Kerouac so much for Soul Dog Creative . Kerouac has passed away since making this and I am so grateful I had the pleasure of meeting her in person before she crossed the rainbow bridge. She was so sweet and sassy. ❤ If you're interested in the full process, see our video on our YouTube page: https://youtu.be/iPhwMQnfW5U #dogs #custompetart #husky
Y'all know by now that Bella and I are happiest when we're out climbing hills and hiking the amazing trails around Spokane and North Idaho. Do you know the one place where she finds the most joy?
