Planning a BBQ over Labor Day Weekend? 🌭

While BBQs and outside activities are an exciting time for people, pets are relying on owners to keep them safe from the dangers that these get togethers bring.

Grilling dangers for pets can include oils from fat drippings and meats that can lead to pancreatitis in pets if ingested, an accidental crash into the hot grill by a running pet, and the potential for your pet to consume something toxic from the trash or stolen from a guest's plate.

You may consider asking guests to keep their plates well above dog-level so pets don't go helping themselves while you're still eating.

If there is chance that a pet has consumed something toxic, or is displaying symptoms of toxicity, immediately seek help from a veterinarian.

Check the forecast for your Labor Day weekend activities - in some areas of WA, we are looking at a high of 88 degrees. If high temperatures or a heat wave is expected, it may be best to leave your pet at home or plan a safe, shaded, cool area to leave them during outdoor activities.

Excessive heat mixed with physical activity increases the risk of pet heat stroke and/or paw pad burns. ☀️

Meet Remi!
Remi is a 3.5yr spayed female dachshund who presented to BluePearl Tacoma with back pain. She under went an MRI of her spine where it was determined that she had a disk herniation. She then under went a hemilaminectomy performed by Dr. Dan Hicks.
Pictured here she is feeling the benefits of the cold/hot compress. While only 3 weeks since surgery, Remi is back to her spunky self! She is still on activity restriction to allow the area to finish healing though she is showing great progress. Remi’s owner says “Dr Hicks and his team are amazing!”

💙 A hemilaminectomy is a surgery of the spine that involves removing part of the laiminae on a vertebra to relieve excess pressure on the spinal nerve(s) in the lumbar spine, or lower back.

Recognizing & Preventing Heatstroke in Dogs - BluePearl

It has been incredibly hot in Washington recently, and the weather doesn’t look like it’s going to cool down soon! This heat can affect other pets, not just dogs, so make sure your checking on all the animals.

🥵 Tips on preventing pet heatstroke:
🐾Don’t exercise your pet in the middle of the day. Walk your dog in the morning or evening to avoid the hottest hours of the day, if possible.
Keep pets inside on hot days. Even if your yard has shady areas, temperatures can shift throughout the day.
🐾Always have water available.
🐾Keep pets well groomed. This helps their fur do what it is intended to do—protect from sun and insulate from heat. If the coat is matted and tangled the fur may actually trap heat.
🐾Limit activity and maintain pets at a healthy weight.
🐾Keep walks at a gentle pace and if your pet seems tired, rest or stop the activity.
🐾If you suspect your dog is having a heatstroke, soak your pet’s body with towels and water, and put them in front of fan if possible; then bring to them to your veterinarian hospital immediately.

BluePearl Tacoma has begun hosting vaccination clinics to combat RHDV2. Our Avian and Exotics specialty team and Dr. Kristen Gill are working very hard to have as many cotton-tailed patients as possible protected. Hare BNB Rescue, Spa, & Boutique has already stopped by to start protecting these adorable fluffs – many of which are available for adoption.

What is RHDV2? Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus, Serotype 2 (RHDV2) is a highly contagious and deadly virus that exclusively affects wild and domestic rabbits. Even if the rabbit is kept inside, they are still at risk. The disease can be transmitted by people or animals through contact with contaminated objects, animals, insects, or f***s. It can be stable for months on surfaces.

Handsome K9 Max’s life was saved last week because his handler knew the symptoms of bloat/GDV and acted immediately. We are grateful to BluePearl Pet Hospital in Renton and their late night emergency surgery team and are pleased to report both Max and his handler are on the trail to recovery and will be back serving King County residents soon.
Bloat or GDV (gastric dilatation and volvulus) is an emergency that is fatal if not treated promptly. Most common in larger, deep-chested dogs it can actually occur in any breed.
Know the symptoms (https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/bloat-in-dogs/) and be prepared to act quickly. Remember to keep emergency vet contact details handy and call them if in doubt.

After an evening of tricks and treats, remember to hide the sweets!

Candy, especially chocolates, can cause pancreatitis and even intestinal blockages in dogs if ingested with the wrapper. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, so be sure to never leave trick-or-treat bags on floors, low chairs or coffee tables.

When choosing your blooms for Easter this weekend, remember to avoid lilies if you have a cat in your home. Easter lilies are toxic for cats if ingested and can result in acute kidney failure or even death. All parts of the plant (leaves, petals and pollen) are toxic to cats. #BluePearlPet #LilyToxicity

Note: Other toxic lilies (for cats) include tiger, day, Asiatic hybrid, Japanese Show, rubrum, stargazer, red, Western, and wood lilies.

Dog Vomiting - Toxicity or Foreign Body

Raise your hand if your dog has ever eaten something they shouldn't have. 🙋🏾‍🙋🏻‍🙋🏼‍ Although we know dog vomiting is an unpleasant topic, it is something that pet owners are bound to face, and it is important to note the difference between vomiting (using effort to bring food/liquid up) and regurgitation (no effort demonstrated when bringing food/liquid up), as they have significantly different causes and treatments. In this video, Erick Mears, DVM, DACVIM, BluePearl's Medical Director in Tampa Bay, explains the difference in symptoms between dogs suffering from toxicity versus those who ate a foreign object. #AnimalPoisonPreventionWeek Let us know the strangest thing your dog has eaten in the comments below.

With spring in full swing, you may be considering a spring cleaning at home. But to keep your pets safe, the best practice is to read the ingredient label of any household products prior to purchasing and be particularly careful with products containing ingredients such as bleach, any acids or oxide/hydroxide ingredients. #AnimalPoisonPreventionWeek #BluePearlVet

Toxic Ingredients for Pets to Avoid:
Hydrogen Peroxide
Isopropyl Alcohol (or rubbing alcohol)
Bleach
Ammonia
Phenols

If you suspect your pet has been poisoned or are concerned about possible exposure, contact a veterinarian or seek veterinary medical help right away. Two good options, which do have a small cost associated with them, are the Pet Poison Helpline at 1 (844) 492-9842 or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 1 (888) 426-4435. This may save you a trip to the pet emergency room.
