Although it is “not spring” on this warm January day, these ladies seem to be finding pollen. And giving me confidence they will make it through to real spring.

Autumn into winter is a slower time in the garden, but far from fallow. Today I harvested some beautiful cauliflower-farmer for scale- and rose gold fingerlings. Cleared and topped off two beds completely (at this rate everything should be cleared by spring.😂) And turned some of last summer’s garlic into next spring’s garlic.

Ahab had his White Whale. Every gardener has their own elusive crop(s). This year, after three and two years of attempts respectively, I finally successfully cultivated the Crystal Apple Cucumber and the Garden Peach tomato. The cucumber did not live up to the hype and I won’t keep trying to grow this delicate flower. But the garden peach is perfectly colored, covered in fine fuzz and as sweet as it’s fruity namesake. Definitely worth the effort.

*Edit* forgot to mention my first effort at cantaloupe. They were fully formed though only softball sized. And not sweet. Not sure what they need that I didn’t give them. Will likely try again.

Romanesco zucchini from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds is a new household favorite. When my kid requests grilled zucchini for dinner, I am thrilled to oblige.
