On Monday we had the honor of hosting Blue Path’s Arthur for his first meeting with a horse friend. BluePath provides autism service dogs. Arthur is an 18 month old service dog in training and was the most well mannered boy meeting not just any horse but our biggest horse W***y. (W***y thinks he’s Arthur’s size). Given W***y’s size in comparison to Arthur he was very curious and calm meeting him. Thank you Kathleen Hayward for bringing Arthur over!

*Explanation of the contraption they’re standing in down below - please read until the end*

Yesterday was farrier day for some of the boys - which for those that don’t know means they basically had a pedicure. 💅

Horses should have their feet trimmed (and/or shoes reset if they need shoes) every 6-8 weeks. Right now none of our guys need shoes so they were just getting trims. This doesnt hurt them it’s just like us cutting our fingernails.

Now let’s talk about the “stocks”. The contraption you see Olaf & Sven standing in may look like some sort of torture device but I promise you it’s not for them. There are a couple reasons we use the stocks for the Draft horses to get their feet done.

1) Many draft horses are only ever started in the stocks when they’re young for the farrier’s safety (so they don’t fall on them, kick, etc). The downside of that is many of the horses we have (because we haven’t owned them their whole life) have never been done “on the ground” (without stocks) and therefore never learned how to hold themselves up properly on 3 legs…which you can imagine 1,500-2,000lbs leaving/falling on the farrier doesn’t make for a safe situation or a happy farrier 😬. Once they’re bigger it’s a lot harder to teach them to stand up and balance long enough.

2) There are many farriers who refuse to do any Draft horses regardless because of their size. So the stocks make it much easier and safer on the farrier and the horse.

Now the chains that you see over their backs and under their bellies are for their protection. Some horses can get worked up and try to jump out of the stocks or lay down in them and so these chains are helping prevent that. The farrier is able to tie one foot up at a time to work on it and then give them a break in between. Both Olaf and Sven walked right in the stocks which is great because when we first got them in 2021 they were pretty nervous about having their feet done - we’ve come a long way. You’ll notice the other horse getting done “on the ground” because he’s just a year old and doing really well with his feet so as long as he can balance and be safe we’ll do him outside of the stocks until needed.

Added note - if we have a horse who is injured or something and they’re not cooperating with us doctoring it we can use the stocks for safety and efficiency 😊

You can learn more about what we do, what the horses do and how we do it by coming by for a tour!

Help Wanted - Ellsworth
2 Jobs

Looking for someone to work at a small horse barn. This person would also possibly be interfacing with the public visiting the barn doing tours during the day. Duties would include cleaning stalls, handling horses (large Draft horses not saddle/riding horses), filling waters, grooming, keeping the barn clean, greeting customers coming for tours, and possibly other miscellaneous tasks that can be discussed. Prior horse experience is a plus - please note there are no riding opportunities with this as these are all Draft horses who are not ridden.

Looking for someone to work in a small store/market. Candidate will be greeting customers and assisting them with anything needed, taking payment for items sold, greeting and guiding any guests checking in for tours on where they need to go.
