Help us name our Screaming Hairy Armadillo!
Saharan uromastyx (Uromastyx geyri) are herbivores feeding mainly on plants and seeds. At the aquarium they seem to like dandelion greens the most! Come check out these unusual lizards daily from 11-6 at the Electric City Aquarium & Reptile Den.
Frilled lizards (Chlamydosaurus kingii) are know for the folds of skin that surround their head. If startled they will expand these folds to create an intimidating display to scare off predators. The folds also expand slightly when they are feeding!
African Cichlids
One of the most diverse fish we have is the African Cichlid. They are found in freshwater lakes in Africa and can be either vegetarians or carnivores based on which species they are. Scientists are still identifying new types, but there are currently over 1500 species identified.
Did you know some geckos lick their eyes to keep them clean? In the video one of crested geckos (Correlophus ciliatus) displays this behavior after its enclosure was misted.
Chamelons have an unbelievable feeding strategy! Using their specialized tongues, which can extend over one and a half times the length of their body, they are able to capture prey from great distances. In this video you can see our panther chameleom (Furcifer pardalis) catching a cricket.
Now you can feed the stingrays!
Starting Monday August 17th, you will be able to upgrade your experience at the aquarium! Purchase a stingray feeding cup at our admissions gate for one of two feeding times throughout the day.
Stingray feedings will be limited at 1:15pm and 4:15pm daily. This is first come first serve, so don't wait! Add on this amazing experience to your admissions ticket at our front gate!
- Sharks are apex predators and are often viewed by humans with a mix of fear and awe. There are, however, many challenges that they face because of humans. Shark populations have been negatively impacted by overfishing (especially in Asia where shark fins are used both for traditional medicine and as a delicacy in shark fin soup), entanglement in fishing gear and as bycatch (which means fish that are caught accidentally by fisheries intending to catch another type of fish), habitat degradation, pollution, and global warming. But what can we do to help? Support legislation that bans shark fin trading, support local fisheries with good fishing practices that work to reduce bycatch, donate to or aid organizations that help restore ocean habitats like coral reefs which many species call home, and fight pollution and global warming by recycling and reducing your carbon footprint.
The leopard shark is at home on the seafloor, just a foot or so above the sand.
This is because it, like all sharks, lacks the swim bladders that other fish use to fine-tune their buoyancy. Instead, a leopard shark stores oil in its enormous liver.
All that oil helps to counterbalance the shark's weight, but it usually remains slightly less buoyant than the water around it, so the shark tends to sink whenever it’s not swimming. #electriccityaquarium #electriccityaquariumandreptileden #sharkweek #leopardshark
