So I debated sharing this but I think its important to share what goes on, on a farm.. as it is never a dull moment! I learn new things about the animals in my care daily! I thought I was going to have to dispatch a turkey due to an injury we found under its wing but it turns out... I learned a few things!
1. Bruising on a turkey/chicken is GREEN so don't mistake it for gain green / infection.
2. When Tom's mount turkeys they can seriously injure them... as they are clumsy as can be!
3. They are surprisingly hardy at healing!
So all that being said... here's the story of Giraffe the Turkey... (my son named her)
The other day when we were putting the turkeys up, we noticed that one of them had a bump under its wing and it was wet...
We lifted the wing up in her horror we saw this nasty gash in her underneath wing.
So me thinking I was gonna have to dispatch this Turkey, because we thought it was gang green... I Decided to instead go to the chicken/ turkey fb groups and ask them their thoughts, and if we could save her in an overwhelmingly amount of them said yes, try to save her. They've seen worse injuries than this, and then I learned all the facts above. And now i'm sharing them with you.
So far we have cleaned her wounds thoroughly with sailing water and cut off all the nasty, bad feathers from the blood from her injury. Then we sprayed a couple of ointments on it and bandaged it up like you would any injury. Over the next few days, we'll give you updates with her progress and how she's doing, and if she survives this ordeal or not.
I personally have high hopes for her. She acts like literally, nothing is wrong, and she's out there doing just her normal turkey stuff!
Stay tuned for future Turkey updates on her. 🦃🥰
