October 2025 ➡️ June 2026.
Same turtle.
Same shell.
Eight months of healing!

FROM LAWN MOWER TO FREEDOM 💚

8 months ago, “Jim Bob” arrived with a devastating lawn mower injury. His shell was fractured across the top of his carapace, leaving exposed tissue and a long road to recovery ahead.

Today, Jim Bob was released back into the wild!

The first photo was taken in October 2025 on the day of intake. The second photo was taken today, just before release. The difference is incredible! We’re so proud of him 🥲

Turtle shells are living bone covered by keratin, and injuries like this don’t heal overnight. Over the past few months, Jim Bob’s body slowly rebuilt and reinforced the damaged area, transforming an open wound into a strong, stable scar.

This success story was truly a team effort. A huge thank you to Lakota Haven Wildlife Rehabilitation , who fostered & trained with Jim Bob for several months and provided exceptional care during his recovery journey. Wildlife rehabilitation takes a village, and we are grateful for partners who help make outcomes like this possible!

After months of treatment, monitoring, and patience, Jim Bob has been given the chance every rehabber hopes for:
The all clear for him to return back to the wild where he belongs!

Safe travels, Jim Bob. We respectfully don’t want to see you again 🌿🐢
(Video will be posted later today 🙂)

🚨 MURDERDOZER UPDATE 🚨

When this common snapping turtle arrived after being struck by a vehicle, her shell injury was so severe that we weren’t sure what the coming days would bring.

The Pipsqueakery named her “Murderdozer,” because her mission in life is to murder anyone who tries to help her. As of now, wildlife rehabbers are # 1 on her hit list.

Despite a devastating shell injury, she’s alert, strong, and very determined to remind us that she still means business. Every treatment session requires careful planning, quick reflexes, and occasionally highly specialized medical equipment…such as pants.
Last time it was a plastic container. This time it’s a pair of fashionable pajama pants 💅

Before anyone asks, no, the pajama pants are not because she’s cold. Originally they were used because they were in arms reach and we needed something quick to cover her head to calm her down. But then we noticed she was enjoying the girly pop plaid so we decided to let her keep wearing it while we provided treatment!

When Murderdozer first arrived, the wound contained freshly traumatized tissue, exposed shell fragments, and significant inflammation from the impact. 5 days later, we’re seeing encouraging changes. The wound bed appears cleaner, the tissue is beginning to organize, and we are not seeing the foul odor, heavy discharge, or obvious dead tissue that would make us worry about a serious infection taking hold.

The pink tissue visible within the wound is particularly important. That tissue is part of the body’s natural healing response and is exactly what we hope to see during these early stages. Before a turtle can rebuild shell, it must first create healthy tissue to protect the injured area and support future healing.

In other words, the goal right now isn’t for the hole to disappear.
The goal is for the wound to stay clean, healthy, and alive while Murderdozer’s body does the slow work of repair.

For a turtle with an injury this severe, those small changes are big victories!

Please keep Murderdozer in your thoughts as she continues her recovery. She has a long journey ahead of her, but if stubbornness counts for anything, she’s already halfway there!

🐢 🐢

This week, we have two big needs that are helping us make an even bigger impact for the turtles in our care!

💚 Veterinary Fund
Our account at the veterinary clinic is beginning to run low. These funds help cover life-saving treatments, diagnostic testing, surgeries, and medications for injured and sick turtles. Keeping our account funded ensures we can say “yes” when a turtle needs urgent medical care. Call All Pets Vet Center at 502-489-4778 📞

🔨 Sponsor a Slab: Help Build Fort Shell-ter
We’re also continuing our Sponsor a Slab fundraiser to help make Fort Shell-ter a reality! By sponsoring one or more slabs, you’ll be helping us create a safer, more functional space for turtle rehabilitation. As a thank-you, sponsors will have the opportunity to decorate their slab(s) once construction is complete, leaving a lasting mark on this special project.
Check out the fundraiser here: https://givebutter.com/sponsor-a-slab-bdrbdz

Every donation, no matter the size, helps us continue giving injured turtles a second chance. Thank you for supporting our mission and believing in the work we do. ❤️🐢

Just 2 weeks can make a big difference!

When Snappy Tomato, the common snapping turtle arrived, he had significant shell trauma with exposed tissue and a high risk of infection. Two weeks of antibiotics, wound care, and plenty of turtle-approved attitude later, his injury is already showing encouraging signs of healing.

Shell injuries don’t heal overnight. Recovery takes weeks to months, and every clean wound bed, every bit of healthy granulation tissue, and every day without infection is a victory.

He’s not ready for release yet, but he’s heading in the right direction!

🚀 Never have we ever had to turn a snapping turtle into an astronaut because she couldn’t control her temper but here we are.

This common snapping turtle was hit by a car and thankfully made her way into wildlife rehab. She first landed with our friends at The Pipsqueakery who were kind enough to treat & then transfer her spicy little butt to Lakota Haven Wildlife Rehabilitation who then transported her to us for continued care.

She has a severe shell injury that requires ongoing wound care, injectable antibiotics, pain medication, and frequent monitoring.
The good news is she’s feeling stronger.
The bad news is she’s feeling stronger.

After several attempts at convincing her that we’re trying to help, we were forced to get creative.
Enter: the Snapper Space Program™ 🧑‍🚀🪐👽

The “helmet” allows us to safely administer medications and provide treatment without risking a finger donation to the cause. It may look ridiculous, but it keeps both patient and rehabber safe, and sometimes wildlife rehabilitation is equal parts medicine, problem-solving, and improvisation.

Despite her terrible bedside manners, she’s bright, alert, feisty, and fighting hard. With time, proper care, and a lot of patience, we’re hopeful she’ll make a full recovery and return to the wild where she can resume terrorizing absolutely everyone she meets.

💚 If you’d like to help support this chunky reptilian butthead, please check out the links below. Every donation helps provide medications, supplies, and specialized care for demons..err..turtles just like her.
